Chronic kidney disease stage 3a

I was diagnosed with this in April and had to wait till end of June for appt. with nephrologist.  Had a bunch of tests and now going for those results tomorrow.  I don't have high blood pressure or Diabetes or a chronic used of pains meds.  My mother died at 39 of kidney failure so I think it is probably hereditary.  I have been on internet trying to figure out what to eat and to avoid foods that are bad for kidneys.  Then I find out everything seems bad especially if you try to make it tasty.  I have lost 25 lbs. just eating less and heathier but it does not seem to have helped the kidneys much.  Any advise or anyone with similiar problem.  I will ask doctor tomorrow if I need to see a dietician.

@chiclet I'm sorry to her of your situation and can't offer help or suggestions.  My own kidney numbers have been getting a bit worse over the years.

Last year my primary wanted me to see a specialist but before I did that I went to another doctor who suggested that maybe I was dehydrated.  I tried for several weeks to drink more water (it seems that I really wasn't drinking enough) and had another blood test afterwards with my numbers coming in normal.

This summer once again I wasn't drinking enough and my blood test revealed that so I am making an effort to drink more which is not easy since I hate having to use public restrooms when I'm out all the time.

I did have a problem with high blood pressure but have been taking meds for it and have lost 25 lbs this year.  I would like to lose a bit more this year and hope that helps with my health.  I would also love to get off the bp meds someday.

I wish I could offer some advice but I'm curious to see what others might have to say.

ETA:  If you do ask about a dietician, I would also ask how much water one should be drinking each day.

Sorry to hear that you're going thru this. It's more common than most people know.
My numbers have been borderline for kidney disease. My pcp tells me to drink plenty of water and watch my sodium intake.

The past few years, my numbers have been getting a little better.

Re: Chronic kidney disease stage 3a

@chiclet , I have been in stage 3 for  over 4 years and so far hanging in there fairly well.  Salt is one of the biggest enemies, but call me crazy, I still put a tiny sprinkle of salt on some things occasionally!  But you are right, it is tough to figure out exactly WHAT we can and can't eat!!

Post back here and let us know what results you get from your tests and I will have more tips and suggestions for you.  Because as ironic as this is, I have to walk out the door right now on my way to........my appointment with my kidney specialist!!

First, I will say a prayer your results are the best possible news. I am so sorry you have had to go through all this, waiting for a diagnosis all these months.

I would think what you ingest has some kind of correlation with your diagnosis, however slight. I am a bit surprised that your doctor did not automatically recommended you see a dietician  unless he/she had given you information on what to/what not to eat which it sounds as though that is not the case.

I admire your being so proactive. Be strong - am sending you virtual hugs and support. Please let us know how you make out.

I also have Stage 3 and have had for years.  My creatinin level is usually stable but I also take Andrew Lessman's supplements that help a little.  It doesn't have to be deadly unless you go way overboard with your diet.

Re: Chronic kidney disease stage 3a

Just curious if anyone who has chronic kidney disease can answer...were you diagnosed with this initially strictly by your GFR value? Or were there other blood levels that were off like creatinine or BUN?

@chiclet, I hope you get all the answers you need tomorrow and guidance to keep your kidney issues stable. Will be thinking of you and hope your appointment goes well.

I have stage 3B chronic kidney disease.

One kidney was removed 2 yrs. ago...so far I'm cancer free..

I have to watch my salt and fat intake..no artificial sweeteners...no soda..they did say I can have a glass of seltzer....no citrus...lots of water.

Good luck to everyone who has this at any stage.
