Everyone is different. I recently read that older people may only go every two days or so and that is normal. I think also that it has to do with the amount of food taken in daily, i.e., the less taken in, the less often given out.

The colonoscopy only turned up one polyp, however the cause of my chronic constipation remains a mystery. GI doctor only suggested I eat more fruits (?!?!?). I have to believe he missed something. He claims I do not need another colonoscopy for 5 years. I dont understand it and was considering getting a second colonoscopy but I have a high desuctible plan and had to pay over 2,500 dollars for the first one.
Your colonoscopy could be completely normal, and it wouldn't matter if your constipation is caused by your diet. My guess is you need to re-evaluate how what you're eating is contributing to this problem.

Has any doctor ever voiced or mentioned autoimmune disorder to you?
As we age, both for most - men & women, the body becomes sluggish or has minimal dysfunctional digestive syndrome issues.
If your recent colon procedure was cleared with only one polyp and benign, then I would describe you as being fortunate \ preventative maintenance.
You do not, in my opinionated medical knowledge, ponddr any more tests unless deemed necessady. Omit any or all of the other sophisticated tests! If any doubt, then for sure decide on a 2nd opinion.
IBS is very prevalent in ages over 50. It is either constipation or diarrhea.
I have a very good friend who is a gastrointestinal specialist. She has had seminars that teaches one Miralax dosage Xs 2 daily is sufficient.

I know of many patients who rely on a form of wheat\ I.e., Met. Or Benefi.
Diet plays 100% in patients with autoimmune issues. Fibromyalgia would fall under the heading.
Not everyone can tolerate fruits. I would be one of those many.
Personally, for myself, I drink at least 8 oz of water every 3 hours. My resolution per self.
Stay away from all sugars, carbohydrates, dairy and minimal use of unsweetened anything, along with all processed foods.
My diet. Not having any suggestions of the beforehand mentioned, though. Just the most healthy that I have control over. Magnesium and vit D3 is a daily supplement.
This is my routine, not to confuse or suggest as any cure all for any one healthcare regime.
I believe, for me, that diet and those foods I choose are well effective for me!

This is so true! I just had to comment. My husband and I laugh at each other concerning this topic all the time.
We say --- boy, are we old. This is a subject which we are always bringing up to each other. It's like a barometer to how we are feeling. One will say to the other --- Oh, I feel crummy today --- or -- My stomach feels lousy --- to which the other will say --- Did you "go" today?? LOL! Goodness --- never thought this would happen!! Ha-ha! But you know what? It's very true -- if this part of your body is not working properly, you do feel horrible!! And it's a shame that as we age, it does tend to bog down. Just what we need --- another issue on top of everything else!!!

In addition to increasing fiber, water intake and having a good diet, in general, it's important to be as active as one possibly can. One of the reasons older individuals get "bogged down" is because they aren't active. The body's processes/organs can only function at full capacity if they are receiving oxygenated blood and removing waste products at a good pace. Activity also promotes motility in the digestive system, so food will move through more quickly. If a person is sedentary, everything will slow down and not function as well. So constipation really should not be viewed as a "normal" part of the aging process.

The older you get the less stomach acid you make. This can cause a myrad of problems including paralyzed bowel. This can be detected using the Heidelberg Diagnostic test is used to diagnose Hypochlorhydria (reduced acid production), Hyperchlorhydria (excessive acid production), Achlorhydria (no acid production), Pyloric Insufficiency, Heavy Stomach Mucus (from infection or ulceration), Acute and Sub-acute Gastritis. The test will also allow the physician to observe peralstaltic activity, delayed and marked delayed emptying of the stomach (Gastroparesis)and dumping syndrome. The test is an in-office procedure that does not require the use of a catheter, or sedation. During testing the patient is relaxed and comfortable, without the trauma associated with other procedures. There is two methods of testing with the pH capsule. The first method requires the use of a fine medical grade thread (tether)that is attached to the capsule, so that it can be suspended in the stomach for extended testing of the stomachs parietal cells. Testing the parietal cells requires challenging the cells with a sodium bicarbonate solution that will cause the stomach to become neutral or alkaline. The time it takes for the stomach to reacidify back down to its original fasting acid level will determine what condition the patient has. Reacidification time is vitally important in deterinining hypochlorhydria, hyperchlorhydria and achlorhydria. The second method of testing allows an un-tethered capsuled to migrate through the alamentary canal for testing the stomach, small and large bowel. This method requires a complete medical history in a controlled environment.
This test is not done by your average MD but you can find them in natural medicine holistic centers. If you are needing stomach acid, it's a easy fix and you will be going like new again.

@SandGirl....thanks for the info on the Fruit-eze...I was reading about it and wondering if you could just combine those ingredients and make your own?
Nothing has ever worked to really help me on a reg basis, I also take magnesium at night and the probiotic...I have tried SO many things, but folks sure had good things to say about it...

@quadmimi I did try years ago to make my own in my food processor, it was very hard on my processor that's for sure, I would soak the figs / prunes / rasins so they were soft and I used some prune juice for the liquid, it did work pretty well but I just buy a 2 or 3 pack from them (free shipping) and it saves me time, hassle, clean up and may save my food processor (lol) I will be honest, it did NOT work over night but I told myself to commit to it and just take a dose morning and night, after a week I was finally going more regular (and I too have always had to take something to go) it really has helped me but just don't expect and over night miracle, I love the taste and honestly I just eat it right off the spoon, its SOOO good but then again I love figs, prunes and raisins, I used to eat an apple each day, I dropped my apple and replaced it with my servings of Fruit-eze, that way I'm not adding extra calories.

@SandGirl Thank you so much for the info...I am really thinking I will try it. Nothing else has ever helped, and I doubt there is anything I haven't tried!...
I will give it a while like you said.....(oh I have done all the medical tests, nothing wrong there)
