@tends2dogs   I am having my first colonoscopy tomorrow and I'm nervous. Nervous about the prep, being sedated, and "what if" they find something.
I was reading about the prep and I have been eating light as others have recommendedand am hopeful this evening goes well.

Good luck to both you and me.

I had my second one last year.  I think everyone is nervous the first time as was I but, honestly, it's not bad at all...just an inconvenience doing the prep.  I've used Miralax mixed with water both times and it works well.  You can also mix it with Crystal Light.  The sedation (usually Propofol) they use has really improved...you fall asleep in seconds and awaken quickly after the procedure.  You will be so glad you got it done and you will be proud of yourself!  You will do great!

Sorry...meant to say Miralax mixed in lemon lime Gatorade, not water.

Re: COLONOSCOPY PREP SUGGESTIONS

I mixed my prep with Propel, no problem and I also started much earlier than the doctors instructins.  I didnt want to be up all night!  It worked out very well that way.

Re: COLONOSCOPY PREP SUGGESTIONS

Didn't your PA suggest a product for the prep of this procedure?

Re: COLONOSCOPY PREP SUGGESTIONS

Agree with using a straw to get it to the back of the mouth right away, bypassing a lot of the tastebuds. It was also suggested to me to suck on an Icecube right before drinking to deaden those tastebuds and to quickly suck a lemon slice right after before drinking lemon flavored liquid to disapate the taste.

Re: COLONOSCOPY PREP SUGGESTIONS

@tends2dogs I have only had one colonoscopy. I did the Gatorade and laxative and some other thing. They tell you  to pick a flavor of Gatorade you don't like much, because after the prep you never want to drink that flavor again. My niece does something I think I will ask for next time. It's two small bottles of something (not sure what it is), you take one bottle, then drink a certain amount of water after. Then a specific time before your scheduled procedure you drink the other bottle followed by the water. I think this is easier  as bad as the small bottles are, it's over more quickly than the Gatorade.

No, I am going to a gastro specialist.  I called and  scheduled it myself.  The gastro doc ordered the prep.  It is the two part liquid and Dulcolax prep.  I just asked my PA his opinion.  I didn't need a referral.

Re: COLONOSCOPY PREP SUGGESTIONS

I agree with everyone who said eat light, easily digestible foods prior to the prep.  That way, even if you can't get it all down, you'll be cleaner.

first time I had the big gallon jug with a powder.  The one I had this year was dulcolax the night before the prep, then more Dulcolax on the day of.  I had to drink a Miralax mixture and then massive quantities of a choice of liquids.  For me, it's just too much liquid in too short a time.  It's like 8 oz every 10 or 15 minutes.   I couldn't even finish the one I was on before it was time to start the next one.  I ended up throwing up.  I will never do it that way again.  The main reason for all the liquid is to keep you from getting dehydrated and damaging your kidneys due to the liquid coming out of your body.  But, I see no reason to force myself to drink more than I can comfortably drink.  It didn't help that all the choices were super sweet even if you chose diet.

Even with all that liquid I sleep through the night.

Not sure if anybody mentioned it, but be close to the bathroom. You CAN'T hold it.  Also, if you don't normally use products like Dulcolax it is NOT gentle overnight relief.  About 2 hours after taking it there was cramping and you better be headed to the bathroom right away.  Fair warning.

Re: COLONOSCOPY PREP SUGGESTIONS

I did not read all the tips but one thing NO ONE told me ....is...everyone system is different.I know my comments are going to get push back from some people but every body's situation is differnt.

IF you have a slow digestion and  "GO" less often...you should consider limiting your food intact more than 1-2-3 days before your procedure.

FOR ME. I followed the instructions the first time and i was not "clean"....

The second time I did not want the same resuts so I stopped eating heavy foods, meat etc. like a week ahead....I also did a "cleanse" with magni. citrate about 2 days ahead of the doctor's instructions so I was "clean"

So I did a liquid diet, and ate breakfast but I ate as little as possible and no meat at all.

Re: COLONOSCOPY PREP SUGGESTIONS

@tends2dogs

Glad your PA said you should get one. Everyone is different, and most probably don't like the method all my Gastro Doctors demanded for me.

Good ole Go/NuLytely! Last Colonoscopy I drank my 20th gallon. Not all of them were for a Colonoscopy, 5 were for Double Balloon Enteroscopy, 4 lower 1 upper. Not my favorite thing to do, but far from the worst.

My Gastro's say it is the best and I bel I have no reason to doubt their many experiences. No suggestions from me, just my history, with my method. Not that bad in my view.

Sounds like yours will be on Monday the 10th. Got my own appointment the same day. Hope the Prep and Procedure go well for you, and sending you my best.
