Went through a scare recently w/i a relative. Dentists are prescribing clindamycin like water- prophylactially. Just in case....I am OUTRAGED as how so many doctors and dentists RX when a patient doesn't even have a bacterial infection. We might kill you w/i our RX in the next weeks or months for something you don't already even have. CDiff can show up a LONG time later. When you get diarrhea from it that is NOT c diff it is extremely stressful. The probiotics MD's list are mostly drug store garbage and they don't even know there is not enough active culture in the junky average grocery store yogurt. My relative's MD RX'd a powerful probiotic. We're talking 13 BILLION vs say a Shaklee w/i 500 million. Donna Schwenk has a wonderful book about how to make your own kefir, yogurt and fermented foods. The prior info about refusing to take an antibiotic unless they know exactly if it is a bacterial infection and if that RX will work for it is excellent. Except----the MD's don't try to get that specific and just slam dunk their RX's. It's time for us all to get more educated as MD's and RX's are a leading cause of death.

A word to the wise...if you ever need antibiotics for something common like tooth infection and the like, please ask your provider for a narrow spectrum antibiotic. The providers have options. They need to take the time to explore them.

Started my medication yesterday and due for another at 5 am. Can't get 8 hours of sleep so have to set the alarm. So far so good.

I did ask the nurse at the doctor's office about my Florastor and she said to take it but not within an hour or two of the antibiotic.

I did see on tv about the fecal transplant and it didn't look as gross as it sounds. They do something with the sample and then just put it in with a small tubing. I checked and there is a doctor in the city at the trauma center that does it. Said it should be a blood relative so my daughter would be a good donor if need be. Hopefully won't have to go there but it's good to know I wouldn't have to go far.

I have taken medication over the years but I think that Flagyl is the worst I've ever taken. Maybe with Crohn's disease it's worse but I couldn't go out for 10 days nor did I want to to spread this around.

The doctor had me wait 14 days after my last Flagyl to be tested again. Good thing I got more sample containers when I was there. I don't see him I just go to the lab for a check. They post my results on the computer and will call if I'm positive.

My specialist said that after having Cdiff people usually have some form of colitis. He told me to take Metamucil every evening which I did after the first time around a few years ago. I have medication for it but rarely take it. It's hard to determine if it's the colitis or cdiff. When the pain didn't go away I knew it was more serious.

My dad had aortic valve replacement 2 1/2 years ago. He brought it with him from the hospital to the rehab center. What a nightmare for an 84 year old person! Yes, probiotics were recommended as well as eating yogurt.

My friends mom, STILL has difficult from the C-diff she got in the nursing home and that was 3 years ago.

Florastor is THE pro biotic to take to help ward against a reoccurance of c diff!

I was diagnosed a few weeks ago with cdiff. I took 10 days of Flagyl and then was rechecked 2 weeks after stopping the antibiotic and I still have it. My doctor wants me to take Vancomycin. I read some of the side effects and don't feel comfortable with it. Has anyone taken more than 2 10 day treatments of Flagyl and had no cdiff after treatment. The Flagyl was hard to take and I feel better with no cramping. However, the test does indicate the infection is still there.

I was diagnosed with cdiff almost 3 years ago after having several surgeries and taking a lot of antibiotics. I haven't taken any since then so this is not from antibiotics. I took a 10 day treatment of Flagyl and was checked and I was clear back then. Does anyone have any information on the treatment that worked for them. I'm very careful and wash my hands a lot, some say I wash my hands too much. Just can't understand how I got this. No explanation at all.

My doctor wants me to take the liquid form of Vancomycin, anyone ever take that form or pills?

Also want to say that I was taking Floraster for a long time and stopped taking it probably 6 months or more ago. I took it while on the Flagyl and thought I would be fine. Not.

Thanks

Prevent Infections – C.DIFF. Fact sheet - HAI Watch

C. difficile is a bacterium that can live for weeks, months or even years depending on the environment. It is most commonly passed to patients in hospitals by touching contaminated surfaces or by the hands of healthcare personnel/medical staff. New strains of C. diff have emerged that are antibiotic resistant and cause more serious disease

Antibiotics is a catch 22 it kills off the bad bacteria as well as the friendly bacteria which one needs after the bug is killed, or it could return so it is important that the doctor tell the patient to fortify with those foods and nutrition to build up the friendly flora so the immune system can be strengthen. When the immune system is weak the patient struggle to heal.

This is VERY TRUE. All those hand sanitizing products used don't combat c diff! During all hospital visits make sure any and all medical professionals thoroughly wash their hands. Don't let any staff member tell you they're 'following protocol' just using a hand sanitizier. I had it out with an ER staff member recently!

Antibacterial soap was a good idea, but in reality it defeated the purpose because it also killed off the friendly bacteria in general which in the long run compromises the immune system.

Some don't like Dr. Oz but I think they miss the point of his mission is to make the patient aware of many things so they are armed and seek out a doctor who is not rubber stamp of the system and has the patient interest at heart.

I don't always agree with everything Dr. Oz says but it is helpful to have a frame work to work from....

C-Diff is a serious infection and not always easy to knock out. I would suggest you work closely with your gastroenterologist and follow his orders for treatment and for dealing with any side effects. Many antibiotics have unpleasant side effects -- but sometimes it is necessary to take them to fight a life-threatening infection. C-Diff can be life threatening. Don't play with this. Work with your doctor.

I've been taking the Vancomycin since Tuesday and I'm feeling a lot better. I feel a little tired but other than that I'm pretty good compared to the Flagyl. I'll never use that again ever.

I find it strange that my insurance wouldn't pay for the IV to be mixed up for $200. at a compounding pharmacy. The capsules cost $1,200. my copay $5. Makes no sense to me. If my insurance would of paid for the liquid I would of saved them some money.

I do have a question for those that have ended up in the hospital. Did you have any signs a few weeks before you went to the hospital. Like cramping or pain. Guess I was lucky that I caught it so fast. I do have to make sure this is taken care of. I had to cancel cataract surgery when I was diagnosed. I want to have the surgery and have to be clear before I can have it.
