Well it's finally happened I have a large bunion and my toes are overlapping on my right foot. The podiatrist told me they come from many years of "squeezing my foot into high heels" and most recently, years of thong flip flop wearing.
I am scheduled to see the orthopaedic surgeon tomorrow for his opinion on having the necessary surgery to correct.
In conversations with friends there have been many who say it doesn't work for the long run and they'll eventually return.
Has anyone here had the foot surgery and if so, how was the recovery and how long. I live alone it's my right foot so of course I'm sure no driving will be involved.
Thank you

My mother had a bunion removed. The pain was terrible and recovery long.

Look into Lapiplasty. It's a new, less invasive type of bunion surgery that doesn't just cut the bunion area but deals with the root cause. For years I've used silicon toe spacers to keep my bunions at bay but when they quit working I'm getting this type of surgery.

Thank you for the info I will ask the surgeon about it. I have travel plans in May & June so hopefully what I read the recovery is quicker.

I had bunion removal on both feet at the same time about 40 years ago. It was very painful, but times have changed and I don't think it's nearly as bad as back then. I remember my ex made something to put my feet up on in the tub so i could bathe. He'd get me in and out. Good luck.

Sorry, no advice but I often look at those who are wearing flip flops as everyday footwear and wonder about their feet. In the near future, podiatrists along with hand surgeons (texting) will have no shortage of patients!!

I had the surgery about 26 years ago. It was not painful. That bunion did not return. The doctor wanted me to not return to work for 6 weeks but I talked him into going back in 3 weeks as long as I elevated my foot as much as possible. I don't remember when I was able to drive but I was driving myself to work at 3 weeks.

I have a friend who had both her bunions corrected by surgery about 10 years ago. Very painful and long recovery. Both her bunions returned.
I have a medium bunion on one foot. No toe overlapping yet. I've been wearing a bunion regulator at night for years. I think it's helped prevent it from getting worse. I know that doesn't really help you now, but I'm mentioning it in case anyone else is trying to avoid surgery.
Best Wishes to You!
