Re: Broke myself for the first time this morning

@Laura14, first, I am so sorry for your injuries.  Hopefully, you will heal quickly.  So glad that you filled your meds.

Tramadol was the only painkiller that worked for me when I had my tbi.  I was allergic to everything else--thank goodness for the drug take back days.  I, too, thought that I could deal with the pain with Aleve, but at night I needed something a little extra.

My suggestion is to use this time to relax and let the healing begin.

The next time that I hear salt and ice together, it better be in a margarita!

Re: Broke myself for the first time this morning

@Laura14

I have broken a few bones over the years. My nose was first, now that tally is a total of 8 times. Only taped up once after having surgery to fix it. Other times I would take my hand a pull it straight, and stuff it with cotton to clot the blood.

Broken toes, with the Big Toe really making mobility tough. Nothing could be done other than time healing those toes. Broke my Calcaneus (heal bone), and also now have broken 6 ribs, the last being in either February or March, not sure.

Same with fractured ribs, not much one can do but wait and hope for the pain to subside. Never took prescription drugs for most of them, just over-the-counter meds. Some of those injuries I was on blood thinners and Tylenol was all I could or would take. I refused any Opioid prescriptions, which I was offered.

Closest to your injury is when I tore the ligament that joins your left finger to your thumb. Had a cast that stabilized my thumb and first finger/went about 6" up my forearm, and over the knuckles closest to my hand. Wore this for 6 weeks.

Could not tie the bow in my ice skates, had to have my friend at the rink do it when I went skating. Could leave them, just not tie them at the top. While I could type. i had to hold my arm above the keyboard, which got very tiring typing long posts like this one.☺

Only Tylenol for me because of my colon bleeding issues, no Opioids because no way I will ever take them. I prefer pain over "out of body" experience.

Hope all goes well for you. Takes some adjusting, but you will handle it.

It's not really funny, but the burning reference cracked me up.  Fill the RX and take the meds - the more your reduce swelling, the better they will be able to diagnose the damage.

Maybe I should shut up but not the unbearable pain I thought breaking a bone would be.  Just stiff and really achy.  I have a brace since ortho is closed until Monday.  I also have a prescription for two drugs but haven't filled either one yet.  Just doing ibuprofen.

Am I living in a dream world?   Should I go get them filled because the pain happens later or is a broken wrist pretty bearable?  Stupid question I know but I'm deciding to just keep my day going as is and wing it.  Look how well it's going so far.  Smiley Surprised

Also, if you've ever done anything one handed, you will entertain yourself immensely.  Opening a stevia packet is a new art.  And I still can't even type about the "attempt" to shampoo my hair after I got home from urgent care.  Smiley Very Happy

Any tips anyone has about caring for a broken bone or being one handed, I'm all eyes.  Hope your weekend started better!

@Laura14

I'm sorry to read about your accident.  I've broken my wrist and know how painful it is.

Did they x-ray your wrist?

@muttmom  They did and the urgent care doc thinks it's fractured (ulnar bone) but the ortho would be better.  I thought she said she would send them to someone today and call in about an hour but since half the day has gone by, I'll just call the ortho on Monday and scheduled some more fun.  Smiley Happy

Re: Broke myself for the first time this morning

@Laura14  So far (she types as she's knocking wood) I've not broken a bone.  I did have surgery on a finger that required my hand be bandaged - finger sticking out - for a few days.  It was my right hand and I am right handed.  Using the bathroom was interesting and bathing and shampooing with my right hand covered with a ziploc freezer bag (rubber banded at the wrist) was fun too.

Keep knocking @Bird mama!  I made the same remark two weeks ago at my doctor's office that I never broke anything.  Oooops...

My biggest prayer so far today was thank you God for elastic basketball shorts.  Not sure I'd get anything else on my lower end right now one handed and THAT would have been a site to see at the pharmacy counter.

@Laura14

I fell and broke my left shoulder last August.  Fortunately, I did not need surgery.  I wore a soft arm brace for a couple of months and had PT for three months, after which I continued on my own.  Like you, I never used a pain med.

Here it is, ten months later and I have complete movement in my arm and shoulder that almost matches my right shoulder.  The only residual left is I am still unable to pick up anything heavy with that arm.  But ever since RA I use both arms to pick anything up anyway.

I assume you did not need surgery on your wrist.  I get RA in my wrists often, so I can easily imagine the discomfort and disability.  I wear wrist supports when I am in a flare.

Take it slow, it will heal.

Re: Broke myself for the first time this morning

A boken  bone is something you KNOW has happened. Undenible, unbearable pain--I broke my wrist in Jan on ice and it was the most painful thing ever. It was at an odd, unnatural angle too.  It swelled up from fingertips to elbow and then turned a gross shade of ugly greenish, purple, from the bruising.I was splinted (er) until I got to the ortho dr and had surgery a few days later. No pain meds helped me at all so had to endure 6 weeks of just dealing with it. I had chemo and rads for cancer and I have to say that the broken bone was much more consuming and hard to live with. Still am healing from it but doing ok. I would get the meds to have on hand--it's hard to get pain under control once it rears its ugly head. No broken bone is bearable, IMHO. And you need to follow up with a dr too. Fortunately, I am right handed and broke the left wrist so doing things wasn't too impossible.
