Re: Breakfast -- what are your thoughts?

My sugar will crash if I don’t eat something in the morning...usually hard boiled eggs or protein shake. I have to take meds at a specific time in the morning and must take them with food, so I just have a routine now. DH is a huge breakfast guy, any time of day. Tonight for dinner I made pancakes, eggs, and sausage. He was a happy camper. We had Cobb salad for lunch and this morning we both had cold cereal. I think to have or not to have breakfast is a matter of personal preference. When I was working I would take a protein bar or a yogurt and eat it during my 2nd planning period. Now retired, we both enjoy late breakfast because I have the time to make it.

No breakfast for me....but it isn't the meal you skip.  It's the hours that you eat.  Autophagy kicks in at about 16 hours. However, what you eat (hopefully nutrient dense food not composed of saturated fat, sugar, oil,salt) is more important than when you eat.  It just becomes a lifestyle....doesn't require any thought after you are used to it.  Food does not consume my life.

I eat breakfast because I'm usually hungry in am because I don't usually eat after 7pm.

What do I believe? None of it, for me personally. I eat what I think is best for me and at any time of the day or night. I have never in my life counted calories. Food choices and amounts were/are more important to me.Never believed in 3 meals a day and have never ate that way, through my fat years/thin years, and my choice of weight years.

I believe in "grazing", which is eating nutritious food(for me) and never eating more than my body needs to function at it's highest and most efficient levels. Right now and for the best part of 2 years, I have and feel just GREAT!  What more could a person want for themselves!

For years I have never EATEN breakfast.  I eat my  very healthy dinner at about 4 PM. Nothing after that.   no snacks.  Go to bed about 7 pm.

I wake up about 4AM....I have hot unsweetened almond mild with organic coffee and Medicinal mushrooms in it.  That is all....no FOOD  all day until my dinner at 4PM. Just my almond milk....I take herbs throughout the day and drink lots of water and drink hot tea.

this works for me. I am going on 65.   I feel better NOT digesting food all day while I am busy.  I have no issues with blood sugar or any medical issues.  I am not a triathlon athlete....no need for lots of food.

@SeaMaiden

Wow!  How do you do it?  You must be very thin.  I could never do that.  Don't you get  hungry when you are doing a lot work, such as housework, yard work, etc?

@AngelPuppy1     No, just average weight for height.    I am not doing this for weight loss etc.... I have been doing this for so long it is just normal for me.

  As I said... I do drink almond milk unsweetened heat up and add mushrooms and also take supplements throughout the day, so it really is not going without food. Almond milk is a food  of sorts.....

I just feel better and have more energy  without digesting meals all day. Years ago when I ate food during the day, I got gassy and had digestion issues and that did not work well when doing retail sales... thus I decided to stop eating  solid food during the day. and find ways to still nourish my body.....

This may not be for everyone... but,  it works for ME.  My dinner is very balanced and only healthy foods..salad...salmon... qunioa... etc.  I have been eating this way for going on 25 years now.

@SeaMaiden

I envy you that you have found what is your perfect balance.  I have a lot of digestive issues and am always trying to find ways to feel better.  I believe your method, though appearing somewhat unorthodox, has a lot of merit.  Not bogging the body down with a lot of food, most of which is probably not necessary, seems much better for the body, in particular as I know as we age, we need much less food.  Thank you for your kind and interesting reply.

Meals change with where we are at a certain point in our life, don't they?  I now have to take a med in the morning, too and so, find it necessary to eat a certain amount of food in the morning.  At times, I think I would probably eat much later but now find this choice has been decided for me.

What is "authphagy"?  Never heard of that.  I know the old saying --- live to eat or eat to live.  I go back and forth on that --- unfortunately!

Re: Breakfast -- what are your thoughts?

@AngelPuppy1   This healthy process starts occurring after you have not eaten for 16 hours:

Autophagy is the body's way of cleaning out damaged cells, in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells

The minute you put a calorie in your mouth, the process stops.  This is another reason why intermittent fasting is good for you.  I usually don't eat for 18 hours daily to take advantage of autophagy.  It's easy, just skip breakfast or dinner.  Of course, what you eat  during the six hours is critical.  I eat to live too, that's why I eat whole plant based foods!

@phoenixbrd , where did you come up with the 18 hour number for autophagy to begin?  I see longer numbers like 20 and that the benefits stop after 32 hours.
