Breakfast -- what are your thoughts?

We've been told for years --- breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

Must eat breakfast!  Eat a large breakfast.  I also heard that lunch should be light, and dinner also.  Don't eat after a certain time in the evening.

Now, they're saying --- don't eat breakfast!  Why the sudden change???

What do you all feel about this?

All the years I worked, I never ate a proper breakfast except perhaps when I was off.  I would get to work, and perhaps at around 9:30 or so, I would have 1-2 cups of decaf coffee and a protein bar -- that was my breakfast!

Now, that I am retired, I do eat breakfast -- usually within 1/2 hour of getting up.  Cereal, bananna, or something of this nature.

Also --- if you do eat breakfast -- what do you feel is a healthy breakfast?  I was told by several people that cereal is not that good for you.  But I am not much for eggs, and have somewhat high cholesterol.

If you're not supposed to eat breakfast, then do you eat a large lunch???

It's so confusing!  Eat breakfast -- don't eat breakfast! This is good, this is bad!

What do you believe???

Thanks for your comments and opinions!

Re: Breakfast -- what are your thoughts?

I never eat breakfast. Never have. Always in too big of a rush to get out of the house to work. Deep down, I've never understood how people could sit down in the morning and eat. It would slow you down so much. also, a little bit of hunger in the day gives me an edge. I seriously believe I think and work better with a stomach that's not full. I realize that others may be different.

Re: Breakfast -- what are your thoughts?

@AngelPuppy1 : Personally I think that's up to each individual and his/her body.

I have to eat breakfast or my sugar level crashes. I don't eat beyond 5pm the night before and that's just a handful of pecans, so after working out in the morning I have to eat by 7. I don't really care what "they" say, I know what I need to do. My sister cannot eat breakfast until later in the morning, about 10 or after. Works for her.

I hate those general pronouncements as though people are exactly alike.....one size fits all. I don't think so

Just listen to your body, you will soon find what suits you.

My dad was totally breakfast and my mom stumbled around in her slippers until lunch.  One of my kids would just die if she was forced to eat breakfast.

There was an intermittent fasting thread here, and lots of us eat on various patterns.

Re: Breakfast -- what are your thoughts?

Honestly, I just listen to my body, if I'm hungry I eat, if not then I wait til I'm hungry.  I think IF(intermittent fasting) has become very popular so perhaps that's where the no breakfast is coming from. When I do eat breakfast it's either a fried egg, high fiber cereal, avacado on toast mixed with some lemon juice and garlic powder, juice(from my juicer), a shake in my vitamix which is blueberries, kale and some flax seed sometimes a banana, Applegate naturals chicken/apple sausage.

If I eat the avacado on toast, I'm usually not hungry again until later in the day, because of the higher fat content. I think you just have to listen to your own body. I'm certainly no expert on eating, so this is just my humble thoughts.😊

Take time every day to enjoy where you are without a need to fix it

Re: Breakfast -- what are your thoughts?

@AngelPuppy1 -

If I wasn't listening to any of the reports or studies and listened to my own body, I would eat when I was hungry and that usually doesn't happen when I wake up, sometimes not til mid morning or afternoon.

I think that is what the new studies show-that we should eat when we are hungry.

I can see the benefits of each-to eat or not to eat breakfast.

I guess we can see that eating breakfast gives us fuel to start the day,

whereas not to eat until we are hungry makes perfect sense too!

Since opinions and studies seem to change all the time, I guess it is okay to just go with what works for each of us!

It is just like all the years they said take calcium, then calcium supplements for women can cause heart problems, or take probiotics (acidolpholus before all the marketing!), then don't, esp don't anymore with antibiotics, put babies on stomach-No! put babies on back when sleeping and on and on!

Re: Breakfast -- what are your thoughts?

I feel the same way!  It's all so confusing isnt it?

I used to really like cereal but don't have it anymore....the bottom line is that it is loaded with carbs and so I'll either have eggs with veggies, or berries & yogurt for breakfast.  Then there are times when I do skip it but will have a large salad for lunch.
