My big toenails curve inward, thus creating ingrown toenails. The last time i went to a podiatrist my toenail got infected. I think because he didn't use a sanitized pair of scissors when he cut the corners. Needless to say I won't be going back to him. He wanted to cut the borders of my toenails too. Sounded so hurtful, and now I definitely won't have him do it.

@Kachina624 I wouldn't notice that at all! I always speak directly to people. If you're uncomfortable, try peep toe. You might feel better about that.

It never grew back and to me, looks somewhat strange when I wear sandals. I often wonder if anyone else notices it. I never wear polish to avoid drawing attention to that toe. Polish will not stick to skin and neither will glue in case you get the idea of using an artificial nail. I wouldn't do it if I were you.
Here's a picture of it.
Looks fine to me. My more recent one doesn't look any better. I understand, most guys couldn't give a hoot less how a toe of their's looks, I sure don't
I always wear laced shoes, except of course with things like this surgery prevented me from doing so. Flat feet and spinal alignment doesn't work for me. Had custom Orthotics made many years ago, and wear them in all my shoes. It also helps me prevent Plantar Fasciitis, been there too many times during my running days.
Hey, thanks for the pix!

While helping move my sister's piano, my big toe got run over (super OUCH!) I was in pain for many weeks, hematoma under nail bed, and as it slowly grew out it became lifted from the nail bed and developed fungus and thickening. Eventually saw a podiatrist, had the portion lifted off the bed removed, and had the remaining nail treated with a laser 3 times over the course of 3 months. It took a year and a half to grow back in fully but THANKFULLY no more fungus or lifting. Today back to healthy and normal. Long process of patience, hiding it in summer and holding out hope!

@hookedonq That sounds so painful. Thankfully that did not happen to me. I did trip on brick steps trying to carry a box of stuff inside. The right toe was bloody and painful. What happened to your toe nail sounds like the same thing that happened to my toe nail - it lifted off the nail bed and thickened. The right one is worse but the left one is the same way. The podiatrist said I must have dropped something heavy on them.. At least you had good results after the removal. I'm still trying to decide what to do...

@Kachina624 Thanks for the pic.. Even without the nail, your feet look way, way better than mine... Hammer toes, etc. They are awful, but I do like to wear sandals in the summer time.. When I can wear nail polish....

In 1 of my posts I mentioned umpteen "black toe nails". Those are pretty common for middle and long distance runners. It is basically a "hematoma" under the nail, blood. They hurt like he!!.
Lost count of how many I had, but my Podiatrist told me I could do it myself, if I could handle the pain. That is what I did each time, after the 1st one when I visited him. My wife would always leave the room, she didn't want to watch. This I can tell you, those "hematomas" really hurt.
After I finished this procedure the pain was instantly gone. No more weeks of walking and still running while it hurt. Thought I would throw this in because there is a way to relieve the pain, if one wants to do it.

@hookedonq, you scenario sounds like a nail avulsion, where the nail is totally separated from the nail bed. An avulsed nail will eventually separate itself off the nail bed, and part of the lifting is the new nail growing out beneath it. It is already loose on its own.
I agree that an injury may precede a fungual infection, but laser treatment for fungus has generally been declared not to be very successful. In other words, the nail may have grown out fungus free without laser treatment.
If your nail @KatieB was not totally separated from the nail bed, that is what he is wanting to do surgically. Is he wanting to do laser treatments?
Just curious, because some podiatrists invested in their own lasers as a cash only treatment, because they are considered "investigational" and insurance will not pick up the cost of the exhorbitant fee.

Follow up...I did wait a while before opting for the lasers, but the new nail SLOWLY growing in was becoming unhealthy. The fungus was not going away. The podiatrist let me know there are no guarantees on laser working...for some it does and some it doesn't, but I decided to go for it. Luckily, I had success.

@GrailSeeker Thanks for your post. My nails are not totally seperated from the nail bed. But I could tell that the nails were becoming loose from the length the nails were trimmed when I went to the nail salon. Under normal circumstances, I don't think the nail could have been trimmed that short.
The doctor did not mention anything about laser treatments. I think I'm going to have to have the right one removed just by the way the nail is growing after the most recent injury to the toe (it's like one side of the nail, the outside of the nail is curved away from the toe and the curve is becoming more severe).
