hckynut is not snarly, just real. He's speaking of his own experience, and I value his posts.

Apple Head, I was wondering if you might have played a musical instrument when you were young, or if you had done any kind of repetitive use of that finger over time? I have a thumb that absolutely kills me now and then if I tap or knock it on something in a particular place, and I finally figured out that it has a weakness in it that actually "grew" with the thumb as I over-used it playing my particular instrument. If it makes sense, your body will grow in whatever shape you constantly stress it, if you are at that critical growing age. My thumb has a slight separation in the muscles where a nerve ended up getting less protection than the grand designer intended. That pain almost stops me in my tracks.

Other than that, inflammation all over the body will be screaming at you at a place of injury, like an arthritic joint. What I'm saying is that if you could reduce that inflammation all over your body, your finger should improve. For me, that's a strick dietary change. No dairy, no grains. I sometimes cheat on the grains and it all comes back, truth be told. (just don't want to be a hippocrite here) - Bird

p.s. upon re-reading your initial post, I am wondering if your putting on and taking off the ring over that knuckle might be enough to stress that joint, making it the first to exhibit signs of osteoarthritis? Sorry if this is way off - I don't know your habits.

Apple head - I have had arthritis in my hands. Very painful at times with slight deformity of knuckles. Arthritis is inflammation and I have found using curcumin is the best help. Problem is that curcumin doesn't hold up very well in the digestive tract. I have found a liquid curcumin that has been a miracle for me. It has a higher absorption rate. Check out revgenetics dot com and read about the form of curcumin I take. Used to take Meriva curcumin capsules and it didn't do much - certainly not like the MetaCurcumin. Hope you find the information useful.

Apple Head is a new poster and perhaps doesn't know John. That being said, I have been here quite awhile and I too was surprised at John's curt response.

It's not unusual at all. My mil has arthritis in three fingers now but it started with just the pointer finger on her left hand. She was relatively young, about 60 when it started. She is left handed and she does all sorts of crafts and gardens and cans; so, having arthritis in that one finger was quite disabling for her. Over the years, she developed arthritis in two other fingers on her right hand.

Lots of people have arthritis in their finger or fingers, it's not odd at all. I've had it in a couple of my fingers for years. Most days it doesn't bother me but there are some days where I can hardly use the affected fingers. As for putting a ring on, I'd advise you to find another finger to wear the ring on, because you never know when it's going to bother you and you don't want to end up having to have the ring cut off.

Yeah but it's HER problem and it would be a problem for any woman who has rings that she wants to wear.

I really don't like it when people cry "bullying" when that's not the case, but I am going to try and let that one time pass as a reaction to distress.

My mom has had rheumatoid arthritis since she was 30. This is what happens. If you haven't yet seen doctor, you should. The swelling may come and go, but it may also stick around. Your options then will be getting rings resized or wearing them on a neck chain. My mom had her wedding ring resized and wears no other rings, opting for necklaces and earrings. She has a hard time putting bracelets on, so she doesn't wear those.

Oh, she's also been unable to work, has some really bad days when she can't get out of bed, and is now, in her 70s, contending will all kinds of terribly painful side effects and nerve damage. Sorry your rings don't fit, but you should really be counting your blessings if that's all you're struggling with. I think that's what John's point and it wasn't bullying.

Not knowing your age, I would guess it's the beginnings of osteoarthritis. However, you should also be tested for rheumatoid arthritis (due to the swelling) as that is a far more serious condition.

Thru my mother's experience, I saw the arthritis pain and swelling start in one finger and gradually make its way to all of her fingers, as well as both hands. Her condition has progressed to the point she struggles to do anything with her hands; drops things, cannot hold a pen to write, cannot use a knife to cut and peel, etc. Washing dishes in hot water often helps, plus she dips her hands in paraffin wax a couple of times a week as well. Mom is very sensitive to medication, and can only take Tylenol for relief. This problem started with my mom about 4 years ago, and her hands seem to get more and more disfigured with each passing day.
