On 1/22/2014 cyndog said: I think people are used to the new normal. I swear the majority of young girls in my area are overweight and no one seems to think a thing of it. I think part of the reason is the heavier the average girl (woman) gets, the more hip plus size lines come out to accommodate them. It used to be fuddy duddy Lane Bryant clothes were almost all an overweight woman could find and that alone was enough to keep girls (women) at a smaller size. Of course, Lane Bryant isn't the same store it used to be and updated to accommodate the increasing numbers of overweight young women. I don't remember any very overweight girls in my high school and .now it's pretty much the new normal. Personally, I've never cared about the size number in my clothes, all I care about is if it fits well. Women in the 50's with great figures (Lucy) wore 12's. it's just a number. Don't get people's obsession with it.
Please know that yesterday's 12's are todays 8's. Just visit a vintage store and try on the clothing.

For me, the loose fitting clothes and stretch waistbands most definitely did contribute to me becoming way too comfortable with my size. I know mentally that I should have realized I was putting on the pounds, but for whatever reason I was in denial and just kept buying the roomy stretchwaist clothing. Well one day I finally had a long hard look at myself and knew that I had really gotten very overweight. I have had food issues all of my 63 yrs., so why I let it get so out of hand is beyond me.
Now that I have lost over 100 lbs. and kept it off for 5 years, I never wear anything with a stretch waist. My one rule to live by now is to never order anything that has elastic in the waist, lol.
Of course the clothing did not cause me to gain weight, but I just got back into horrible eating habits and choices. I'm proud of what I have accomplished on my own without any sort of fat diets. I did use Nutrisystem to start my weight loss and for me it worked. I had to relearn portion control and while the food didn't taste like the food I was use to eating, I committed to using the program for one month and to see what the results would be. Well it worked and so I continued until I had reached my goal. I now eat normal foods, but I have really changed what I eat and portion sizes, so the NS helped me do that and I will always be eternally grateful for that.
Didn't mean to run on so, but hope I answered your original question.

The last designer I'd buy to conceal my sins would be Lori. I love her colors, but the styles and the fabrics are not ever what would improve my look. A well-structured top from SG or a properly tailored piece from Louis would do far more.
I once heard Lori say that because her pieces fit over the shoulder and the bust, lots of women can wear them. There's no way I'd even try. I've tried on myriad Eileen Fisher items of similar styling and fabric. With my figure, I just look sloppy.

It's too broad to say that everyone that wears elastic and stretchy fabrics is doing it as denial of their weight issues. Many of us have medical issues such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, other neurological diseases that make it extremely uncomfortable to wear clothing that pushes against our skin/nerves/joints. There isn't a day that many of us don't have pain, me among them, and some days I cannot stand the pressure of fabric without the give of knit or spandex against my skin.
To the OP, congratulations on your weight loss and your desire to show off your new body, but please don't assume that because someone else wears soft, loose clothing, it's because they aren't as disciplined as you or eat as healthy as you. Their circumstances may be far worse than you could ever imagine.

And Susan Graver is always turning around and says ""It covers what you want covered"". Who needs to hear that all the time. I am 30 lbs. overweight and cannot get it off. I take 9 meds every day and 2 insulin shots a day. Some days I wake up and already my blood sugar is 400. Not good.

Good for you Vicki! Losing the weight is great, keeping it off is the real challenge, and I congratulate you for that. I lost 30 lbs. a couple years ago and have kept it off with portion control and reduced carbs. It has been a challenge to replace clothing.
As for the clothing sold on QVC, I've often wondered if the tunic offerings are meant to appeal to those who wish to "cover what you need to."
