Regardless of the background noise, this is an excellent opportunity that I hope will be in my area. You can always learn more tips as a diabetic--and one of them is to keep moving. And a gift certificate to a supermarket each week is a good reason to continue.

I really could use that myself. It is hard to get help for groceries when you have diabetes and need help. If you go get a food box, it is usually filled with starchy stuff you aren't supposed to eat. But they say "if you are hungry you will eat it". True... we will. But that doesn't mean we are supposed to. Which goes to annabellethecats point - when you don't have money, it is truly hard to do the right thing. If ALL you have to eat is a box of crackers or some rice, you eat that. But it is the worst thing you can do for yourself if you are diabetic - living on sugar (and rice and crackers ARE sugar).

All this to say that OP's information was very helpful for those whose money is tight and need help doing the right thing. Doesn't matter to me what other drama someone is tangled up in elsewhere on the boards...I don't notice who posts what most of the time. I respond to topics.

Edited to add..I do remember that other thread come to think of it. Doesn't change that this is still helpful info for those that can use it ;-) Hope OP gets help with the diabetes diagnoses...I'd agree with her doctor on this one. I rode the "pre" denial train a long time before I got run over by it.

Sounds like a great program. Nothing like that here. Even to see a dietician you have to have an order from your doctor. No special food coupons here either. I find watching portions helps, but the biggest help to me is walking. Exercise helps a lot.

Re: Anyone on medicare who has had the doctor tell you that your prediabetic....

This particular program is not for diabetics - but to prevent becoming a diabetic for those who their doctor has called a prediabetic. It is a program to teach healthy eating and exercise to ward of becoming a diabetic. The program is sponsored by the federal government because it costs the government a lot of money to care for a diabetic patient once they are diagnosed. For instance -I am on a medicare advantage plan - medicare pays my insurance co $700/month to manage my care but if I were a diabetic they would pay $1000. They also have to pay for things like every 2 months podiatrist visits - endrocrinologists - skin doctors - wound care centers - cholesterol meds - blood testing equipment -diabetis classes-the list goes on and on. So the government has decided it is healthier and cheaper to simply try to prevent these prediabetics from actually becoming diabetic. When i saw this program advertised at the Y , I was told i needed a Rx from my doctor to get in the classes - so people can't just sign up to get the freebies. You have to need the program.

Good idea. Also, a simple walk around a couple of blocks or to public transportation helps (if physically able). (We drive too much, IMO). Also, taking a sandwich to work in a lunch bag is a good idea, too. Lots of folks around here spend lots of time 'socializing' and eating all day long at work, from what they say. Anyway, I do like the O/P's information. Have to start somewhere.........

You have to walk a lot further than a couple of blocks and a sandwich is noting but carbs and fats.

I am glad you finally accepted you are on the path to diabetes. I am sure you will feel so much better once you drop some of the weight.

'Somebody' cleaned this one out. I'm sure the same people will participate in more of the same, in the future.
