my gastroenterologist first perscribed carafate for what he feels is a peptic ulcer , I feel it is too. Anyways couldn't tolerate it after 5 days of trying ....terrible stomach pain, bloating etc. so he switched me to Pepcid . I have been taking the otc Pepcid for over a year at bedtime , but figured the prescription would be even better. Well since yesterday's 2 doses I noticed within a half hour each time my heart was pounding and racing. Once it wore off this morning it was gone . He wants me to cut back to only bedtime , but I feel I will go back to the otc Pepcid . I will add I'm very , very sensitive to medications and always have issues like this . I don't tolerate meds well, so when I find one that works plus tolerated im so happy.

I've never taken it but have you ever been tested for H.pylori? That's a common cause of peptic ulcers. Many people have it in the stomach and don't even know it. But for others it can be a problem and cause ulcers. H.pylori is believed to cause the majority of peptic ulcers.

I have never used prescription Pepcid. I use Protonix which is similar to Nexium. I was on Nexium before and I think we changed to Protonix mainly due to cost since my insurance wouldn't cover it. This was before you could get OTC Nexium. It was obvious to me immediately that the Protonix didn't work as well as the Nexium did, but after awhile things got better. During that time I relyed on Pepcid Complete for the breakthrough pain. It acts quickly.

@SilleeMee I'm not OP, but my doctor won't test for H. pylori. He doesn't feel that the treatment is particularly effective and there is a high incidence of it returning, so he just treats with ppi's.

H pylori is a real problem. I can't imagine a dime not even checking for that. It is a clause of ulcers. PPI's don't cure the disease, they mask it.....like a band-aid. I'd get another opinion.

I have similar issues to yours and I have gotten myself down to one a week or one Pepcid every two weeks. I have also completely changed my diet which has helped a lot. The minute i eat or drink something wrong, my body tells me about it. Good Luck..

@SilleeMee I actually was tested a couple years ago and it came back negative for
H.pylori. I wonder though if I have it now . I will have to ask if I should be tested again
perhaps 🤔. Have a endoscopy scheduled in February.

@Icegoddess Go online sometime and read about the possible long-term effects of PPIs. I took them for until I could no longer tolerate them. My doctor took me off and now I've adjusted to one OTC Pepcid at night. PPIs were developed for short term use. The label even says so.

@Kachina624 I've always known they are recommended for short term use, but so is the standard treatment for low Vit D; however, for me the only way to keep my Vit. D level in the normal range is to continually take high doses.
I did discuss the osteoporosis connection with my Doctor, but he said the studies did not prove cause/effect. He was actually surprised that I was the only patient to ask about it. Also, I was off of PPI's for awhile and had a couple of choking incidents. I had an endoscopy and the surgeon needed to balloon my esophagus. He also suggested I stay on the PPI's.
You say you took them until you cold no longer tolerate them, but I have had no reaction to them whatsoever. I had a bone scan a couple of years ago and they were fine. I'll get another one next year probably according to my gynecologist's suggestion. I'll wait until after I'm on Medicare to do that. Even if I have to pay up to my deductible, no way will it be the $7800 deductible I currently have (of which I've only spent $282 of this year).

i take Pantaprozole everynight at bedtime rather than before meals on advice of Dr. Says to keep me from having to having esophogitis from acid relfux at night.
I have taken Pepcid, Carafate and Protonix. I think what I am taking now may be a generic for Protonix. Don't have any side effects that I know of.
I hate not being able to eat what others take for granted. I remember back when I could eat anything. Problems started in my 30's and runs in my family - Mother, father, brother and aunt.
