Anyone had surgery for hip bursitis?

I'm receiving cortisone shots once every three months.  The relief is lasting for a shorter time afterwards.  I envision replacing this bursa, but I know nothing about this.  Doc said I don't need a new hip.

@depglass @I have not had the surgery, but I can sure sympathize with you. I have bilateral hip bursitis and it has truly changed my lifestyle. Painful to walk, sleep, ride in car,  climb steps etc. may I ask you if it causes u thigh pain and overall leg weakness? Also did you have an MRI for diagnosis? Thank you and best of luck.

I got the cortisone shot and it did nothing for me. I had bursitus probably 40 + years ago and one day it just went away. Probably 5 years ago or so it came back. Doesn't hurt all the time, but when it does, OW. Walking for a bit makes it really hurt. I never heard of surgery for that issue and wish you well if you have it. Good luck.

Re: Anyone had surgery for hip bursitis?

I too can feel your pain.   I have it in my left hip which started during Covid with Sciatic on that side then morphed into bursitis in the hip.  I had put off my doctors visit of course around that dreaded time period and I finally was able to get in with a chiropractor some months later.   I have been seeing him for over a year now and it does help me.  I keep up with my lfiestyle mostly, but I do have days where it is more uncomfortable and I need exedrin and a heating pad.    I wish you well, evidently mine is not at a point of needing surgery and my hip bone structure is still fine.

I take Flexeril at night which helps a lot with my sleep.  I notice if I lay on that left side in the morning, my normal way of sleeping for my entire life, that pain will start at the hip joint and snake around to the thigh and down the front of my leg.  No, I never had an MRI, they won't allow one with my pacemaker.

My husband was lucky.  He thought he would need a hip replacement and was fortunate the pt worked great.  Whenever he has a flare up he goes back to the exercises they gave him.

@depglass

I asked my Spinal Surgeon friend and he said sometimes does CT Scans on patients with a Pacemaker. MRI is preferable, but when he cannot, he uses CT Scans. Might look into this and see if this might be a viable option for you.

I did not know they could replace a bursa like this! Glad you mentioned it. I also have hip pain and the associated tight IT band pain. I tend to use Salon pas patches on at night and lately I have been trying Theraworxx magnesium cream, which removes my muscle and joint pain pretty quickly. A miracle and better in some areas than Voltarin cream.

@depglass I feel your pain, literally.  I have been suffering with bursitis in my hip, sciatica and spinal stenosis since 2013.  I received large joint injections, pt and took Meloxicam, steroids and Tramadol at times.  I still suffer with it and it  sends me to the recliner to try to sleep many nights.  Good luck as my dr NEVER suggested surgery.

Re: Anyone had surgery for hip bursitis?

@depglass @I get cortisone shots for bursitis.  It is a bit of a weird place and if the doc doesn't get the shot just right, it doesn't help.  Had no idea you could get surgery for it.  Not there yet.  Good luck, I hope you find some relief.  LM
