@AuntG - Dietary fiber lessens the effect of a carbohydrate in the blood. To find the net carbs, take the total carb count and subtract the amount of dietary fiber.

@JeanLouiseFinch What I mentioned about the Keto diet with high intake of protein is true and well known of the diet. As for the effect of it on the Liver and Kidneys, is not my opinion, but medical studies and long term reports. Doctors that were in on it before, are now against it for reasons mentioned, as they have now seen the long term effects. You can do you and no one is telling you to do otherwise so not sure why you got your feathers ruffled. If you only want to hear what you want to hear, that's fine. But others here may be interested to learn, just as I was.

I subscribe to the theory of moderation in all things. Personally I don't wish to live daily life without any sugar, caffeine or processed carbs. What a drag. When I die are ppl going to say wow she lived the last fifteen years without coffee? And died anyway. 😁 I know that I can manage my intake without going on some radical diet plan where certain foods or food categories are off limits. For me it's a matter of mindset and setting achievable daily goals. Logging my meals and snacks works well for me as it forces me to see reality.

@KittySoftPaws Rest assured, my feathers are not ruffled. The formula for ketogenic diet is roughly 75% good fats, 20% healthy protein, and 5% carbs from approved vegetables and berries. I disagree that 20% of anything is considered high. The keto diet is not a fad, it's been around for over 100 yrs., originally being recommended for children with epilepsy so the high fat could feed the brain. Think about the standard American diet food pyramid and compare that to the increases in dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's is now medically termed Type 3 Diabetes.
I also don't understand, if it's so bad, why you and your husband are only slowly edging away rather than abruptly changing course. That doesn't make sense to me.

@AuntG if you really want to figure out the whole carb thing, go see a Certified or Registered Diabetic Educator not someone that is going to eat one meal in 45 hours and likes to preach her diet and lifestyle on a shopping channel message board.

I am working on losing 20 pounds. I am not in any type of program but I am working on not eating processed foods so much. And trying to eat whole foods and less junk and sugar!

It's easy to take pot shots when you're uninformed.

@JeanLouiseFinch wrote:I've been following a keto lifestyle and intermittent fasting for 5.5 yrs. I lost 150 lbs. in the first 2.5 yrs. My initial reason for starting was weight loss. I found a food tracking app called Carb Manager. When used appropriately, it's a great tool. Then the more I learned about various ingredients and their impact, DH and I agreed this way of eating would be a permanent thing. As love it and are not suffering in any way. There are a lot of health benefits to fasting so it's something I'll always do.. My intermittent fasting plan started as a 16:8, then 18:6, 20:4, 22:2, OMAD, or OMAD and a small snack (eaten within an hour's time). Last week I did my first prolonged fast (45 hrs.) and felt terrific. I started one again today and won't break it until Tuesday afternoon.
Wow! That's impressive.
@JeanLouiseFinch I am of the opposite view. I find that you have little respect for yourself or your body. What you are doing is very dangerous. Starving your body has many ill affects. I would be impressed if you ate small portions and exercised.
Not eating can also lead to severe malnutrition and may even permanently damage your organs, and bones, and lead to muscle wasting. Starving, in other words, can cause both physical and mental damage.
Quick weight loss is never the answer. You didn't gain the weight overnight and can't expect to loose it overnight. Diets should be helping one living a healthier life by eating sensibly.
