Anyone Take Medication for Hypothyroid?

I have hypothyroid and take NP Thyroid.  I'm freezing at all times and it takes a lot to keep me warm.

Does anyone else have this problem?  Just wondering if it's the medication?  I know there's one called Synthroid, but don't know if they're all the same.

I go back to the doctor in a couple of weeks and just trying to do some research.

TIA

I take levothyroxine and am always warm. Did you ask your doctor about your being cold?

I also take levothyroxine and do not have a problem with this medication.  In fact I haven't had any thyroid issues since I have taken it. My dosage has been reduced as my thyroid levels have been and are good.  I would ask your doctor for guidance , that is the best person for answers.  Just a thought, your thyroid might be causing certain symptoms you are experiencing.

@Sunshine Kate

I have extreme Hashimoto Thryroidism.

I was freezing all the time.

I started on Synthroid did nothing to help me.

Tried Armour, Did nothing.

Switched to NP and am doing better.

I was freezing on all 3...and am still freezing.

For me, it was NOT the medication.  However, we might all be different.

Re: Anyone Take Medication for Hypothyroid?

I take Synthroid. I've been on it for many years. I have also taken Levothyroxine and Amour thyroid. I initially started out with Synthroid, back in 1982. I was Hyperthyroid. It didn't control all my symptoms, which were mostly Cardiac. I was then given Radio Active Iodine. This made me Hypo thyroid. I switched to Amour thyroid. It worked well for a while and then didn't. So I went back on Synthroid. It takes much trail and error to get just the right one and the right dosage to make you feel well. I have had the symptoms you describe too. Being to hot, too cold, tired, hair coming out, dry skin, I see my Endocrinologist every six months and have blood work. Please dicuss this with your doctor. For me, the Levothyroxine was the worst! Even though it is the generic of Synthroid, I can not tolerate it. I finally feel good for the last seveal years and have not had to have my dosage adjusted for a while. Be persistent, don't get discouraged and good luck! It can take many tries to get it just right!

Re: Anyone Take Medication for Hypothyroid?

I take Levothyroxine which is a generic for Synthroid.  I do fine on it, but I am cold a lot.  Right now, the thermostat is on 75, but it's cooler today and so the temp is about 73 in the house and I'm sitting here with a light jacket on that I wore to the sandwich shop since I knew I would freeze in there. I just assume I'm cold natured since I was also this way before I was diagnosed.

NP Thyroid is more like Armor and are both made from ground up pig's thyroids.  Synthroid and Levothyroxine are both synthetic.

I take levothyroxin for hypothyroidism but I run warm, not cold.  However, that is just my nature and the medication hasn't affected it.

Re: Anyone Take Medication for Hypothyroid?

If you're cold your thyroid is not optimal.  Hypothyroidism will cause a low body temp, once your thyroid levels out your temperature will rise.  Easy way to tell, take your temp.

I was on NP, never could get my levels up, switched to Armour, same thing.  Found new endo and went on Synthroid with Cytomel (which is T3 only) the combination got my levels up and I am feeling much better.  Unfortunately it took since 2008 till 2020 to find a dr who knew what the heck they were doing.

Good luck to you.

[ Edited ]

I take NP Thyroid. If your cold it could be you are not taking enough medication. It could also be something else.

If I'm just sitting around at home I will get cold. My feet are always frozen. In the winter they feel like blocks of ice.

I get cold when the AC comes on.

NP Thyroid is a natural form of thyroid medication.

Synthroid is a synthetic form.

Check out Stop The Thyroid Madness site online.

Doctor's are not taught how to prescribe the natural form. The doctor's have been trying to get me to go back on levothyroxine. No Thanks. I don't like being tired all the time.

Insurance does not cover the natural forms?

Re: Anyone Take Medication for Hypothyroid?

@Nightowlz , you may be like me and not convert T4 to T3 naturally.  I started with the "naturals" pig thyroid and refused the synthetic.  Thankfully for me it was what put me on track.
