There is no proof that rolfing works at all. But the thing is if you go in with and open mind even a placebo has real effect. A lot of pseudo mystic nonsense is associated with it but that can't be helped.

I've heard the same. If one believes then it can work for you. The other draw to some folks is that many if not all rolfers claim they are 'contacts'. Meaning they are in frequent contact with extra-terrestrial aliens.

Huh? I guarantee my Rolfer is very professional. Where do people come up with stuff like this? SMH.

Just because someone doesn't open their mind to learn/understand something new, please don't discount. Go learn something....please.

I am not having a closed mind about it. In fact it was a rolfer who shared her info with me. She had a business and had others working for her. I live in L.A. and we have a number of folks who make claims. If you want to get rolfed, it's up to you.

What I will be bring this up tomorrow and see what my PT/rolfer says...and believe me if he tells me he has been beamed up to the mother ship I won't be going back!

Rolfing has nothing to do with ""aliens.""

Perhaps the local person has those theories - but didn't get them from Rolfing.

Amazon sells body rollers, which you may want to research. I bought one and it has worked small wonders on my deep muscle trauma. I also use Outback which is a wonderful pain reliever, all natural, and doesn't interfere with meds, also through Amazon and elsewhere.

Re: Anyone Had Rolfing Done??

UPDATESmiley FrustratedECOND SESSION

Had it done yesterday...focus was on my feet/ankles and calfs....then some on back.

It was very painful at time as my feet have tender spots and my arches are very tight. Also my ankles and calfs were very tight with trigger points.

Upon examination I tend to stand with my weight baring down on the outside edge of feet...and my right knee is twisted inward causing the right hip issues (pain). He instructed me to walk with my balance/weight on the arch area of feet. also I was scrunching one foot at times...my gait is not correct. I am compensating for the hip pain and over time I am sure I just started doing this without realizing it.

After session I seemed to be able to stand correctly. I felt relaxed BUT that all went away about 30mins later (as usual for me).

My feet/ankles today are tender and feel the same in terms of flexiability.

Wish I had outstanding results to post but nothing much so far.

Did your Rolfer suggest some footwear that might help you correct the walking problem?

Re: Anyone Had Rolfing Done??

no he didn't....he said walking barefoot is good and I have read this also...some believe that orthotics actually make it worse setting one up for trigger points and foot problems. Asl the don't allow for the person to learn to use the muscles/tendons correctly in feet.

I am on fence about all that as we didn't talk about any of it...I can inquire next visit on Monday.

I have been reading on a website called Soc Doc....watching some youtube he has and some of his ideas make sense....I am very desperate for help so open to listening to all ideas.

I have worn otc things in my shoes and bought shoes with this in it and it made no difference in my hip pain or back pain.

Re: Anyone Had Rolfing Done??

I had a neighbor in the 90s who performed this on people. He said it was so stressful on him, he could only do 1 or 2 a day.

Lately, I've been watching all the online videos on QVC for the Pilates machine. All the claims made about what these machines do, sure sounds like what many of you have posted. Albany Irvin, a host, has scoliosis and arthritis, and she says the Pilates helps her tremendously!! Maybe some of you could write to her and ask about her daily routine. She always invites viewers to write her for advice.

I have posted about these before too.

I have a rumble roller - the heavy duty hard type - and it relieves all my muscle cramping.

If I wake up with a sore back, a few minutes on the rumble roller and the pain is gone.

Re: Anyone Had Rolfing Done??

In the 80s, I managed a physical therapy and rehab clinic. Most of our patients had sustained moderate to severe back injuries of notable duration.

Rolfing occasionally came up in conversation between patients and physicial therapists and/or our Clinical Director. Because Rolfing was such an "In" thing in the 80s, our Clinical Director provided an "in-service" for us. Bottom line for our clinic was the following: (1) no Rolfing would be provided on our premisis; (2) Rolfing is inappropriate for patients in an acute phase; (3) due to the sometimes very painful nature of Rolfing, it initiates an inflammatory response which can be good in some, but not good in most others; (4) if asked, we would make no referral or recommendation to a Rolfing provider.

The above was not due to the fact that we were a traditional physical therapy clinic. It was due to our belief that Rolfing could actually cause tissue damage over time (setting up that inflammatory response). We came to this conclusion after long and intense discussions with our board of directors, who were very savvy UCSF trained physicians.
