Re: Anyone Following a Diet?

Don't diet. Just eat right and exercise. Portion control your food. And it's okay once in a while to have an indulgence. Just don't make it a habit.

Re: Anyone Following a Diet?

Diets do not work. One has to make eating proper food choices a way of life. I don't ever have issues ordering out at most restaurants we frequent. I simply request grilled fish or chicken with no sauces and plain steamed veggies with no butter. I do drink some wine, but no one is perfect, LOL.

Weight watchers. I already lost 6 pounds in 11 days. So far I am more energetic feel less bloated. My clothes feel better already ,like my jeans around my belly. I'm never hungry and it's easy to follow. Simple to do. I am a lifetime member and I am 64 years old now on a lot of MEDS , disabled, and need to lose because I'm so about. A total of 40 lbs.

Re: Anyone Following a Diet?

Glad I stumbled upon this thread bc like the OP, I'm looking to drop a few pounds too! There have been some good replies here. I'm just downright frustrated about losing weight. I know you have to be diligent whatever method you choose, but there's just so many conflicting articles/stories out there. You just don't know WHAT to do! I know the same thing doesn't work for everyone, but trying thing after thing has just made me want to scream!

Its hard to be encouraged about trying to lose weight when you hear/read:

"Don't eat processed carbs. Eat whole grain carbs instead."

"Don't eat whole grain carbs bc even those contain too many."

"Choose fruit over candy."

"No! Fruit has too much natural sugar!"

"If you are gonna have milk, drink skim milk."

"No! Even skim milk has too much natrual sugar!"

"Choose popcorn over chips for a snack."

"No! Popcorn..although better is STILL way too carby!"

"Try oatmeal for breakfast(if you don't want meat/eggs every a.m.)"

"Don't eat oatmeal or whole grain cereals...although a better choice than processed cereals they still have too many carbs and adding milk just pushes it over the limit!"

"Drink crystal light or other sugar free drink mixes to help you get your water amounts increased."

"No! Those things are just as horrible as diet soda!"

"Eat 20-30 grams of carbs or you won't lose!"

"No! Eating 75-100 grams is ok for weight loss!"

Those are examples of the things I've been hearing and reading for the past couple of months or so. It just makes my head swim trying to figure out what is right for me. My husband just had a dr's visit a few days ago and he was told to eat more fruit, whole grains & cut back on bacon & eggs for breakfast. He thought he was doing a good job by staying away from carby stuff in the morning bc that's what he USED to go after. He used to be sluggish before lunch when he was doing that.

I'm determined to lose weight bc I really need to, but stuff like that above makes me see why some people just say "forget it" and stop trying! {#emotions_dlg.sad}

Re: Anyone Following a Diet?

I do a modified Paleo diet. It's actually a lifestyle, not just a diet. It's helped me tremendously.

Hi Bandwife! You are right that everything changes every year or so, but some facts remain constant.
Was your DH told WHY he should avoid "bacon and eggs"? Some bacon is loaded with chemicals, and that would be MY reason for avoiding it.
Some fats ARE necessary, but you will find disagreement here between the Ornish/MacDougall folks, who live well on very low fat eating, and others, including me, who use vegetable based fats and are successful as well.
BOTTOM LINE- as you search for solutions to your own body size issues, you have to do some judicious trial and error experimenting before you find what really works best for you.
My. Basic eating plan is lots of low carb veggies, 2 cups of dark red berries, 1 whole egg and 5-6 egg whites and half cup of nuts or seeds every day.
It works, and if for some reason I have to slip, usually because of social obligations, I am ALWAYS happy to go back to MY basics.
Luckily for me, I am someone who LOVES MONOTONOUS EATING. Some people NEED variety, and need to plan several menus to alternate and stay happy.
Last night I had what was probably my 500th large green salad in 2 years, and it tasted WONDERFUL! YRMV.
If you curtail all refined carbs, you can typically lose several pounds in the first couple weeks.
If you are trying to lose about 20, it's usually slower than needing to lose 100, as I did. And I'm still working on those last pesky 20 pounds myself, but I'm SO happy that I've maintained my 85 pound loss for over a year!

Re: Anyone Following a Diet?

Hubs and I are trying the Wheat Belly diet. Got the book explaining it all and dear Lord, all those technical terms and all, bores me to tears. I end up falling asleep so prob won't go any further with it. But I did get the cookbooks from the library and I have to say, they look pretty good and they have a small introduction going over the main points of this Dr. ideas and opinions, that is much easier to read. The recipes are using just a few ingredients and is very diverse and much of it we allready eat. Won't be hard to not eat wheat flour but he suggests all the grains except for a few--and that may be hard. Have to look at the ingredients labels and then figure out what caramel coloring really is--wheat of course. We'll see??!!!
