Hi Noel! I had a dislocated rib high in my chest just a month or so ago. I did buy a brace for it and used Aleve when I had to. I rested a lot, and that's about all you can do. I didn't even go to the doctor because I have had so many of these before and they really can't do more than give you a heavier pain killer. I don't take those, but if you're in really bad pain, they can help (they put me to sleep).

I know coughing and sneezing can make you almost hit the ceiling, and I am so sorry. However, it usually only takes a few weeks to improve. If it doesn't, then certainly see an ortho doc.

Good luck, my friend! Smile

Hi Ford, it's always something with us, lol! Having a rib injury so often has to be so awful for you, that's a lot of draining pain. Thanks Smiley Happy

I am used to them down lower when my back brace can help. But this last one was very high, under my left breast and I was a little afraid it would puncture my lung. I did buy a rib brace, and it took almost a month to heal, but it's ok now. I always say I don't know what's going to break next, or dislocate next. I'm always on guard. My bones are the pits!!

Since yours was from an injury, chances are you won't have one again.

Hang in there, but be careful.

Oh, (((Noel)))! I just saw this thread. I'm so lucky in that I haven't experienced this, so I have no advice to offer. But I wanted to tell you I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. My gosh, you've had so much on your plate yet you continue to be so positive, helpful, empathetic and compassionate. Yep, you're all those things.{#emotions_dlg.wub}

Re: Any Tips For Dealing With Bruised Ribs?

I broke a rib skiing once. Man, it really does hurt. They do say not to wrap the ribcage these days. Having a pillow or teddy to press onto really does help.

So do some good painkillers, LOL.

Even though I did not bind or wear a brace, after I started healing up well, I did wear one of those compression tank shirts, like the Teaser brand. Probably Women With Control would have some too.

I wore one in a larger size than I might normally because I just wanted some gentle support not an actual compression. It was not a tight binding fit at all. The gentle support just felt SO good on days when I was working. I probably wore it longer than I needed to (past the point when I was healed) but it just felt really good. I just found the light support so comforting to me.

It also helped me look a little better in clothes because I could just not bear tight bras at the time at all. I took to wearing those little cloth bras that hooked in the front. Cozy but not overly supportive for work.

These days, I still only wear will Genie Bras because of the comfort factor. I don't work right now so that doesn't matter. I have regular bras when the need calls for gussing up, LOL.

Now that is not medical advice regarding the compression tank shirt, and as such, it may not be recommended. I just tell it to you as something that worked for me.

I wear the Genie bras all the time now also. And the longer ones that go down to the hips. I find they give gentle support to my back without having to wear the big bulky brace. I love them!!

Oh Noel, I am so sorry! I swear by SportsGel for just about any soreness or pain, it really works. I had a ankle sprain, and had to use a crutch for three days as I couldn't walk without one, and the only way I could sleep was to slather Sportsgel all over my ankle and foot. I boy it at Vitacost, inexpensive, and lasts a long time. You may want to research the ingredients and uses.

Hug a pillow tightly when you have to cough.

Yes, I learned this in a hospital after abdominal surgery, it really helped to hug a pillow in general, but especially during coughing.
