Re: Any Ideas....Pain in shoulders at night and numbness in arms and hands

@highmaintenancejan  First he listened to me.  My hour appointments.... he stays right with me.  (We are rural and we still value the one on one and not run away while the patient is in our care).  He did the manipulation himself.  Turning, twisting, allowing me to learn the exercises.  He showed my hubby how to help.  He let me borrow a cane if I wanted to.  (I was not walking all that wonderful, trust me).  But he was THERE FOR ME NOT ONLY WHEN I ARRIVED  ON THE PHONE WHENEVER I CALLED.  IT WAS PERSONAL.  He also looked for ice-heat packs that I could first borrow and then buy.

We are on first name basis and when I go to our local post office I wave at him since his office is in the next section overlooking the little parking lot.

I feel blessed to know Rich and his wife (family practice) and I have sent hiim so many people that I something I cannot get in.  LOl.

I grew up in the era that doctors used to come to the house to treat patients.  He  is sort of a revival and Rich is a real comfort to me.

@highmaintenancejan Check the side effects of any medication you are taking. It is the first thing I do when starting any new med. Numbness and tingling was listed on some as a possible side effect.

Re: Any Ideas....Pain in shoulders at night and numbness in arms and hands

@highmaintenancejan Any pain that disrupts your life should be checked out by a medical professional, if he/she passes it off, get a new doctor.

My sister in law had a pain that wouldn't go away, her doctor did nothing. Finally, doc subscribed chiropractor, then physical therapy, then pain pills. Pain became worse. PT, after awhile, explained that she was wasting her time because she wasn't getting better and recommended she return to dr. suggesting an MRI. She had one, was sent to a neurosurgeon and was operated on.

Her doc, after diagnosing her, said that the chiropractor and PT made her condition worse. I'm not trying saying you have the exact condition she had but rather that self-diagnosis isn't a good idea. See another doc and make him/her to his job.

Best of luck to you.

Re: Any Ideas....Pain in shoulders at night and numbness in arms and hands

Will try to detail this as simple as I can.....over a year night shoulder pain that woke me just turning over - many times - AM pain continued all the way down to left hip.  Bought new gel (stuffing similar to My Pillow but not lumpy) and used 1 feather pillow.  I suspected my head was up too high - body lower = causing stress on neck.  I took a big plastic bag - cut a slit in the pillow (both types) casing and pulled and pulled stuffing out.  Reduced puffy size of pillow down to half their original size.  I can now molding the pillow to my neck and shoulders.  No more pain - no more waking when turning during the night....sleeping better than ever before.  I threw the feather ones in the trash - with less feathers pillow 'crunched in sound' - so just using gel material.  I say...your body is out of alignment and head weight is resting on your neck and shoulder.  Head is up-hill to body.  This is just a suggestion. -   :  gel pillow - J C Penny  2 for ? not expensive

This is also My Pillow theory - which I agree - but hate his lumps.  Try gel filling

I had cervical ridiculitis and my doctor sent me to Acupunture. The best !  It took a while but so worth it.

See a neurosurgeon or orthopedist .  Neurourgeon would be first choice.

@highmaintenancejan Ask your GP for a referral to an Orthopedic doctor.  (You may not actually need the referral for your insurance, but somehow it makes the GP feel more involved if he gives his opinion.). I have fibromyalgia but I also have bursitis and arthritis in my right shoulder which causes me misery.    Now that my GP knows exactly what is going on, he can give me steroid shots in the shoulder and I’m good to go for months.   But he wanted that confirmation from a specialist before he started treating symptoms.

Good luck!  You need to be rid of this pain!

Re: Any Ideas....Pain in shoulders at night and numbness in arms and hands

Push to see specialists!  My DH (who is 73) has svery similar problems.  It started in one shoulder - "spread" to the other then his hand and arm started to really bother him at night (numb and pain) to the point of getting up at 3:00am. And he was also extremely tired and depressed.  Finally after his primary care Dr. realized the physical therapy wasn't working he sent him to an orthpedist and had an MRI.  His shoulder is not operable - scar tissue but the cortisone shots are helping.  His arm was another specilist for hands and wrists - he has Carpal Tunnel is having surgery this Thursday.on one wrist.  It makes me so angry that it has taken months for him to get referrals to the specialists - he may never regain the strength in his wrist but the pain should be gone after his surgery.  And I forgot to add his primary care guy called him a "wuss" and said it was all in his head at first.
