Hi HonnyBrown: I had gall bladder surgery in the 1960's, and had catgut stitches which were supposed to dissolve, but didn't.

The incision wasn't healed when it appeared to me to be infected. I met the surgeons at the hospital. They told me that I was allergic to the catgut sutures, and they cleaned the incision out and put a large bandage on it.

Then I had to get a drain put in it.

Well, it all turned out fine, and I don't think they even use catgut sutures anymore.

Wishing you all the best.

Thank you masque! Catgut, was it really the gut of a cat?

Thank you to betteb for the explanation. I did hear that they were made from sheep. Don't know why they called it catgut. The surgeon told me if I ever had more surgery to tell them that I'm allergic to catgut.

Sutures are made with a material that has color. Since the area is healed try and feel around the area you think the suture is - you should feel it or maybe see some color. Do you know the color the sutures were?

drizella, the disolvable stitches were grey and the permanent stitches were black.

When I look at my eyelid, it looks normal.

When I massage it, it feels lumpier than my other eyelid. I don't know if there are rogue stitches there or scar (healing) tissue.

Re: Any First Hand Experiences with Stitches (Sutures)?

You can be right - it might just be the scar. And in time for the scar will be less lumpy. I have had lots of sutures and it does take awhile for the scars to completely heal. And as we get older it takes longer. Since an eyelid moves quite a bit - it might take longer to heal.

I can't help but think that you will eventually see the rouge stitch, if there is still one in there.

It sounds like scar tissue to me, not stitches. You'll have some lumpiness as it heals and it'll take a while for the scar tissue to condense and be less noticeable.

If in doubt, go see your surgeon.

If you think it is still there, I would go back to see the doc. They can remove it, and then you won't have to worry about it anymore.

Sound advice. Without seeing and feeling what she is talking about I couldn't even begin to speculate.

I had knee surgery 2 years ago and I lately do have some stitches coming to the surface. Go to the doctor and have them removed.

Read my OP: DO NOT tell me to see my doctor!

Ouch.

I didn't ask you to speculate.

I asked people for their experiences with stitches!

Thanks HH! 2 years and the stitches are still moving?
