Best of luck to you and your husband @Carmie .   Both of my parents had Afib at different times.  My mom had heart issues her whole life so it wasn't surprising, but my Dad got it out of nowhere.

My mom got a pacemaker pretty quickly because they didn't want to take any chances.

With my Dad years later, they tried Cardioversion and then went to ablation / pacemaker pretty quickly.  He got the pacemaker at 85 and since they last about 10 years before the battery needs replacing (as in replacing the whole device) he had it replaced at 95.  No issues at all once he got the original pacemaker and the replacement.  We were fortunate to have him for another 3 years and he did not die from any hear issues.

@Carmie , sending best wishes to both of you.  It is great so many posters have given their experience.  It must have been a shock to have this come out of the blue.  Do you due diligence Carmie.  Your DH is lucky to have you as his advocate.

Both my Mom and my MIL took Amioderone for their Afib, helped to keep it under control, very powerful drug.  My friends Eliquis is paid for in full by her insurance, very lucky

@Carmie      my husband John has a friend that experienced the same or similar with Afib    meds cardioversion and hospital stays and on blood thinners     his cardiologist recommended he have a Watchman inserted  which he did

no more Afib and only one 81mg aspirin per day   no episode since    might want to ask heart doctor about this

@Shelbelle  My Eliquis is paid for by my employer insurance as well.  I think my co-pay is $30 for 90 day supply.  I understand it's an expensive drug and no generic available in the US but has been for a while in Canada.

@Mom2Dogs   neither is mine for Watchman     he can no longer take any blood thinner because of his massive colon bleeds when he does

@Carmie   Thinking of you.  A lot to deal with especially if he was never sick.  I am rarely ever sick, so when I had a slight knee issue  in 2022, it drove me nuts too.

I hope you can get the help you need soon.  My dad has AFIB, and he had the watchman procedure last year.
