Re: Advice for stinging nerve pain caused by an injury

[ Edited ]

@Ainhisg

My suggestion would be to follow what @decaf wrote in here 1st post. I have been to an Ortho Doctor that specializes in foot and ankle injuries and issues, and that would be my 1st choice.

If it is a nerve issue the Ortho Doctor might recommend seeing a Neurologist to check for nerve issues.

Like another poster said here, I too am one that is not interested in "treating the problem". My goal is always to "eliminate the source".

Nerve pains on any weight bearing joint, or surrounding tissues, do not need to be a 10 on the pain scale when something goes awry. Thus thinking it has to be a sudden pain is not always correct. Wear and tear can lead up to a certain point, just like the spine, and the slightest movement can be the "breaking point(for lack of a better description)".

Wishing you the best getting relief from your nagging issue.

If the pain has not lessened, time for a specialist.  I see both a Neurosurg and a neurologist.

Nerve pain is a odd, bad thing.  And can come and go.

I too have severe nerve pain.  Have tried Gabapentin,  no relief at all.  I was on Oral Diclofinac but had to go off becasue of GI bleeding problems.  Was then prescribed Diclofenac Ointment  & that helped along with cold compresses. It is now  over the counter & is called VOLTAREN. It's pricey but it does the trick.  Have had 8 Epidurals in my spine & all it did was make my Diabetes go thru the roof & made me gain weight. Hope this helps.

Try  a lower dose  of Gabapentin at bedtime  , it  specifically targets  nerve pain .

Did he recommend physical therapy  or a splint .

It takes a few days to get used to Gabapentin, it makes you feel tired . It comes 100mg, 300mg, 400mg , 800mg

Re: Advice for stinging nerve pain caused by an injury

Know a little about this subject. My husband has peripheral neuropathy in his feet and legs. Started just on a big toe then suddenly spread. This happened to him after he had surgery for a torn Achilles' tendon. Pain from nerves also can begin from diabetes. I would definitely see a neurologist.

Re: Advice for stinging nerve pain caused by an injury

You are right about stopping the gabapentin. It is also a no-no for me as It made me feel weird and I could feel myselt getting a bit of depression which mood changes is a side effect of gabapentin.  I have chonic nerve pain from an old injury to my back and also from shingles.  It seems that after a year the shingles nerve pain seems to be decreasing.

Some of the things that go wrong with us are seem to come out of the blue.  Perhaps an MRI would give you an explanation.  I would be interested in the disagnois if you go further in investigating the issue with a neurologist or orthopod

Try arnica gel or cream.  Probably best to reduce the power walks to the stress on the ankle.

If you are in a medical marijuana state the thc creams will help with the pain for temporary relief, but I agree with the other posters that you need to locate the source. It sounds akin to diabetic neuropathy but could be from any source. The concern is that it has worsened.

I know people who have been in tremendous pain who could not get the source of the problem cured but were spared from their pain by the regular use of medical cannabis.

Re: Advice for stinging nerve pain caused by an injury

Could it be a pinched nerve, have you thought about a Chiropractor?  I had siatica once starting at my booty down to my knee, and went to a doctor, who sent me to a neurologist, who referred me to a pain specialist - who wanted to put me on pills.  I said no, found a chiropractor that helped me to some extent, then referred me to the best help - physical therapy!  Since you are active and power walk, maybe you could search some moves and stretches that would help.  I have nerve pain from the chemo I took 5+ years ago, it is a stinging pain, but usually comes on when I'm resting or laying down, walking seems to help mine.

@Ainhisg  I have some thoughts on this subject and want to answer you but I’ll have to come back later this afternoon to give you a proper reply.

I’m very sorry for the pain you’re going through. I know how much something like this can affect us.

Getting back...

I understand you wanting to try something before resorting to going to a specialist. That’s what I would do too.

The chiropractor is a great suggestion if you have one who is good. Not all are equal.

I’ve also dealt with excruciating sciatic pain. Some things that may have helped was seeing my chiropractor and stretching, but an ankle area is different than a hip and leg and so it’s harder but maybe online videos?

I developed type 2 diabetes some years back and kept getting such pains in my feet. I have recommended before, as have others, alpha lipoic acid, which helps with the nerves. What I have now is 600mg. This has helped immensely. No more feet pain. It may take a bit as it’s not instant. You may or may not need a good B Complex. My daughter is one who can’t miss her B12 sublingual. That helps more than a tablet.

Here’s the one I’m most excited to tell you about. I was thinking of starting a topic sometime about this as I wondered if it would help anyone else. I recently had another bout of sciatica. I had gotten to day 9 of not being able to sleep because of the pain. I happened upon some information on something and it sounded like something I wanted to try. It’s homeopathic and dissolves under the tongue. I had my husband pick me up some at Walmart and took it that night. I don’t know if it was a coincidence but I slept with far less pain. I continued and it got better quickly. This also comes in other products, including a cream in a jar which was in a separate area. I just tried the tablets. I’ll share the picture so you can look into it and see if this is something you might be interested in.

I so wish you relief from your pain!
