There are a ton of electroyte powders available.  I use a sugar free one I buy at Amazon or Whole Foods.  It's great if you're not feeling well.  I also use it if I've sweated a lot during a workout or if I have a headache or have recently got any cramps in my legs/toes.  It also helps the next morning if you've had an extra cocktail.

I suspect it's people who don't like to drink good old water. The electrolytes may help people who've lost a lot of fluid through body functions become hydrated faster than water would. Since nothing will help if someone won't drink it, if someone who needs hydration hates water, this might be a good solution.
