My mom is looking to buy an adjustable bed. She has a very bad back due to spinal stenosis, arthritis, and bone spurs. She has been sleeping in a recliner for years now. Can anyone recommend a good bed? Sleep Number, Temperpedic??? Also, she is on a very fixed income so cost is a factor, Any suggestions for the most cost effective place and time to purchase one? Thank you in advance.

Has she asked her doctor if an adjustable bed would be recommended for her condition? That would be where I would start. Also, a Temperpedic would be extremely expensive. They are at least double the price of other high end mattresses. I just bought a mattress last year and noticed this.
My father has spinal stenosis, and I have disc problems, so I feel for your mother.

I have had an adjustable bed for many years, but for my back(which is minus 3 lumbar discs), my recliners are much better for me than that bed, or any of the many hospital beds I have tried over the last 15+ years.
Why? Even my friend, a Spinal Surgeon cannot answer that one. He only says, "if it works for you John, that's all that counts". Been sleeping in different recliners now for over 30 years, even during almost all of my very long hospital stays.
Just wanted to mention what works for me. If your mom has a good recliner? Worth a shot!

My mom has those same conditions. I run a furniture store, so she bought an adjustable bed from me. She absolutely loves it and brags constantly.
As soon as you start to raise the bottom part, there is instant relief in your back.
Some of the cheaper models only raise at the head. It is important that the feet raise too.
Also, I don't think the sleep number beds raise at the foot. I don't sell them, so I'm not sure. Check it out.
She bought a really good gel memory foam mattress for hers.
Since there are 2 of them, they got two extra long twins which equals a king size. Each person has to have their own controls. You can also get by cheaper by getting one bed, but then both people need to do the same things. Both raise feet, both raise head. That would not work at all!
I sell Southerland brand which is a really good brand.
Hope that helps a bit!

My husband bought me an "Ease" adjustable bed by Sealy. The mattress he bought for it is a Simmons Beauty Rest North Cape LF mattress in a queen size. Altogether it cost, $2030.00. It is very comfortable. My bed was getting old so while I was in the hospital recovering from surgery DH bought it for me. I agree with John @hckynut that the chair was best for my back right after surgery. Since I had open heart surgery it also felt best for my sternum. I must have slept in that chair for the first 5 or 6 weeks. I am in the bed now and loving it! You can almost set this bed in a chair position as it adjusts your head and your legs as you wish.

Getting a prescription for a hospital/adjustable bed for your Mom is where I would begin. IF her income is strapped getting a temperpedic adjustable bed might be just to much money for her. Medicare will cover the bed thur medical supply...you just need to contact her doctor and he can give you the script. They will bring the bed to her home and set it all up.

I was just about to suggest this.

I have a Serta Savant Memory foam bed and I purchased the adjustable frame because of my back. I purchased mine at rooms to go. It was expensive but I think worth every penny. The salesman at rooms to go told me that the rooms to go adjustable frame was made by serta and I could save money buying that. When I looked at them, he was right only the remote was set up just a little different. I will never go back to any other bed than the memory foam. I get the best sleep in this bed.

In order for Medicare to pay for the bed, your mother has to meet certain criteria. Also, Medicare pays 80% if she has a supplmental insurance they should pick up the other 20%. If she is on a Medicare Advantage Plan they will have their own criteria to qualify for a hospital bed.
