Hmm!!  There are some that do exaggerate medical procedures. Why? Your guess is as good as mine. I too heard this same story from a co-worker, many years before I has my 1st Endoscopy. His father died from Esophageal Cancer right after he retired, so he decided to have the Endo.

I expected the worst from just that 1 guy's story. Needless to say, it greatly exaggerated how this procedure is done. You may remember them putting a mouth piece in that only keeps your mouth open, that I  do remember once or twice. It does not go in your throat and does not cause a gag reflex, which I too have had many times, never with an Endo.

My wife has had several, 2 after her bleeding ulcers, and 1 after her stroke. Her experiences are the same as mine. As for your friend? If it was "horrible", I suggest she find a new Gastro doctor.

Have a great weekend!

Thank you so much for posting this reminder every year.

Like the PSA says...it’s preventable...diet & lifestyle is the answer.

The cancer is not preventable.    We can  possibly lower our odds by knowing the early symptoms & getting treatment but it's way to aggressive to pronounce it's preventable.

It smacks of victim blaming.

We can control what we put into our bodies via smoking, drinking etc but there is a component we can't control, like our food supply.   Unless you own a farm, growing organic, whether you are vegan or not, we have to accept the food supply we are offered & make the best choices available.    Environment plays a role.

I don't write this to debate YOU, but I wanted my post to be attached to yours to give another perspective.  I know you are repeating what's in the PSA, which IMO is extreme.

@software  Yes, it most definitely smacks of victim blaming and it is a common theme for this particular poster. Nothing new about it. I have seen posts claiming that diabetics choose to have the disease. Sigh...

My FIL died from esophagal cancer and he did everything right his entire life. So the blame game is particularly offensive to me when someone comes here and plays that card.....

Re: APRIL is Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month

Of course cancer is preventable.

The PSA is from the Esophageal Cancer Action Network (ECAN).

clearly says....it’s preventable.

This is not my idea.

This is not my opinion.

Repeat...ECAN says....it is ‘preventable’.

And in big letters for those in the cheap seats, ‘PREVENTABLE.’

To go through this entire thread, reading the PSAs the OP so graciously posts every year....we still don’t get it?  That is so disheartening.

To say it doesn’t, encourages those at risk NOT to get tested.

It’s a shame many like to drag everyone down their path of unhealthy.

Everyone has the power to prevent cancer.

Re: APRIL is Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month

@hckynut  I am planning to see my doctor, who I am certain will send me to a specialist.  I can then discuss the procedure.  My gag reflex is so bad that I do not even eat popsicles, because I cannot tolerate the stick.

You also have a wonderful weekend!

The next time that I hear salt and ice together, it better be in a margarita!

Re: APRIL is Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month

👋 Thanks for posting this information and discussion. I have a question about my self: I’ve had GERD for about 5 years, I had silent reflux for years before that. I have a sore throat from it quite often. I take nexium a few days a week but don’t want to take it continuously because of the side effects. Zantac no longer works for me. My chest is always sore so I can imagine my esophagus is quite red and rritated. I have asked my GP twice now for a GI Dr. Consult to get a scope but he refuses to refer me. He says if the Nexium works for me then there’s nothing more a GI Dr or scope can do for me. Does anyone know if this is correct? Thank you all!

@Souperkrys

Run to another doctor as fast as you can. From what you have said in your post, it sounds to me like you have never had an Endoscopy. So this doctor of yours has had you on prescription drugs for over 5 years and has no way of verifying your problem?

Not sure what you mean by "refuses", unless it has something to do with your insurance coverage. He cannot stop you from seeing a Gastroenterologist, that is your choice. This doctor seems like he can see things in your esophagus, without a scope! He CANNOT.

It's  your decision, and if you have read ALL the posts in this thread, you saw how terrible this disease is, and also fatal for large numbers every year.

Re: APRIL is Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month

@hckynut

Thank you for your message. No I haven’t had an endoscopy. Yes my GP has had me on Zantac for going on 5 years now, but my GERD has been getting so bad so now (this month) he has put me on Nexium. I have sadly read all the posts here.

I feel like it would be good for me to get a scope to check the condition of my esophagus which I suspect is raw and irritated (and hopefully not even worse) but he is refusing to allow me to have a scope (I have good insurance that would cover it) saying there is no benefit since the Nexium works for me, so it doesn’t sound like I have anything worse than just Reflux.

Is the main purpose of the scope to detect Barrett’s or esophageal Cancer? I guess my GP doesn’t think I have it by my symptoms so that’s why he won’t do it. Is it beneficial for anyone with long term GERD to get a scope?

Thank you again, and I think I agree that I should run to another Dr.
