"5 Die While Using Obesity Devices, FDA Says
At least five people have died soon after being fitted with balloons aimed at helping them lose weight, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday."
I do not think some of these so called weight loss devices implanted are a good idea. Why not just walk more and count calories and have therapy to find out the reasons you use food in the wrong way. I bet over time these people can lose the weight without the crutch of so called " weight loss surgery".
? I know that some people say that they are ADDICTED TO FOOD and can not NOT OVEREAT, but I think that is a cop out. Everyone has the power over what they ingest and put to their lips and swallow...... it may be a very hard road to stay in control, but to say you can not stop eating is just again a cop out. No one is force feeding a person the wrong food and too much food.

I qualified for gastric bypass and every weight loss implant device on the market; I refused them all. Why? Because I've witnessed first hand the OTHER side of the coin, if you will.
It's not all rainbows, butterflies and puppies, let me tell ya. It's hell and it's sugarcoated every way possible. For some, it IS a situation of life or death if they don't have it done. For the vast majority however, it is not.
Personally, I think it (as usual) comes downs to money. Insurance covers it and it's not cheap. But they don't cover WW, counseling (LONG term), group therapy, gym memberships, etc. Something to think about.

I married into a family where the women were morbidly obese.
I never understood it. I'm no skinny minny, my BMI is hovering around 30 but any larger than that and I start having all kinds of problems. I'm uncomfortable, my blood pressure starts to go up. I start having all kinds of digestion problems. I don't need a scale to tell me to push away from the table.
I know it's got to be more complicated than just eating too much food. It's an obsession, a compulsion.
My heart goes out to anyone struggling with their weight.
The people in this article were not healthy when they had their surgery, otherwise, they may have chosen a different path. The odds were not in their favor but they had to take the chance.

I have Kaiser insurance and they cover the cost of my gym membership. They also have classes on healthy living including diet, diabetes prevention, etc. They are very much into preventative medicine. Many of us live in a state of denial until our health begins to be affected.

I have several friends who have gone through gastric bypass and had problems. The friend who needed it most (300+, then briefly after surgery 140, then back to close to 300) has had many problems and definitely still overeats. Another, who was in her twenties when she had it done, regained the weight. Now in her late 40s, she wears dentures and unending list of physical issues. My cousin, who was maybe 40 lbs overweight, bought a Fitbit and lost her weight the right way.

As a person who has gained and lost the same 100 lbs multiple times, I can tell you that for some people " counting calories and using will power" doesn't work, not because they can't stick with it, but because taking in less calories doesn't work
Scientists are working to find out why some people gain weight and some don't while eating the same amount of food and having the same level of activity.
Just this week, I saw where they discovered mice who gained weight by just smelling food. I was floored.
This subject is very complicated and very personal for all involved.
My friend lost her daughter due to complications from Gastric Bypass surgery. She was only 20 years old. She died on the day my friend was being buried...she died from cancer. My friend's son was at the cemetery for his mother's services when he received the call that his sister had died.
And yes, I do believe that some people eat way too much and that is why they are fat. And I know people who eat way too much and never gain a pound like my DH and his siblings.
i have held my weight steady for quite a few years now. My life as far as food isn't normal. I have celiac disease, so all those goodies that are made with flour are out. I live my life with no bread, pizza, cake, pie, cookies, and many other foods and drinks most people take for granted. It's been about 33 years since I have had anything made with wheat, rye or barley,
I still struggle to maintain my weight by eating fruits and vegetables and protein with very little dairy.
Often, I go without eating while traveling and attending functions... like a wedding reception, birthday parties and picnics. I have to sit there with only a drink while everyone else is eating. My DH always eats my food if it serve already plated, so there is no waste.
I have tried every diet plan out there over the years and never cheated. I gained weight while on WW, can you believe that? I was on a doctor supervised all liquid diet ( Medifast) and only lost seven lbs in three months. It was very expensive and wasn't working for me.
I don't need therapy because I don't have an eating problem. I have a metabolic problem that no one can figure out. I am sure as am not the only one.
Before I had children, I had no problems. A doctor told me pregnancy can bring about many issues and it seems my body was changed forever.
For everyone facing surgical weight loss methods, I wish them a healthier, longer life, we are all different and there is no shame in having to use surgical methods to lose weight. Counting calories alone and losing weight does not make anyone a better person or give them bragging rights.
Each of us has our own unique journey to success.

I personally don't like the idea of a foreign object being placed in your body- for ANY medical issue you're trying to rectify. Even knee replacements- your body can reject anything foreign, possibly resulting in infections. I had a 'menopause related' surgery in 2011 - with a foreign object inserted- and had several infections during my recovery, including an abscess. If I wasn't in the ER one Sunday, having the drs observe my intermittent internal bleeding issues I would have died.

I think for some, it is some sort of chemical imbalance in the brain that makes one eat past the point of being full.
It's not a matter of willpower.
There are those who have tried their hardest to do everything right, and they still can't loose weight, simply because they have a chemical imbalance in their brain.
That is not their fault!

@SeaMaiden, I have to disagree with you. No one wants to weigh 600 lbs. That is so sad. I believe they don't have the control to stop and as the scale keeps going up, they keep eating. It's like anxoria in reverse. It is very hard for those people to put food in their mouths.

A small portion of losing weight is actually about 'eating' - or exercising for that matter. The most critical factor is to work on the inside and make a conscientious effort to change what's not working in your life. Denial is a powerful barrier! As the cliche goes, it's not what you're eating. It's what's eating you.
People who never had to deal with morbid obesity in their lives think it's jsut about calories in, calories out. If that were the case I could eat a piece a cheesecake as my daily intake of 'food' and lose weight! lol!
I speak from life experience, having been as much as 300 lbs. I'm a comfortable size 12 now - but want to get another 30 lbs or so lower. My metabolism isn't cooperating though!
