I am going to an introductory class tomorrow discussing what this program involves. It is at my local medical center where I go for all my health issues( physicals, etc. and where I also had all my joint replacements done.
It's intention is to create a life long behavior change. To see where you are at now physically, and what areas you need to improve on.. It involves:
Physical Therapy
Nutrition Counseling
wellness Education Sessions
Prescriptive Exercise
In each area you are assigned a wellness coach who helps guild you in each area to meet your health, wellness and fitness goals.
I am excited about doing this program. At 60, and having just in the last three years had two knee replacements and two hip replacements, I want to work on areas that are my weak areas as far as strength as I move into my 60's toward 70. I have some arthritis in my upper back and neck which I feel I baby this area too much and could be stronger. I want better flexibly and balance as well. I just need to know what specific exercise I can do to work on this daily.
They do assess your weight and dimensions...( scary!) Something I tend to not focus on.... but if this class helps me to work on that as well it will be good. The diet part will be easy as I only eat a healthy diet.
It is not free... but, insurance will cover some of it.. I may have to pay $500 or so out of pocket with insurance. Going to the class tomorrow will fill me in on all the details. It will be a commitment of my time for those 4 weeks. I have not committed to anything since my last day at work three years ago last month... so that will be the deciding factor in if I do this.
I will let you know how the class goes and if I think I am ready to commit to this program.
Is this something you think you would do if it were offered to you? Let me know what you think. Thanks!

No, I am pretty sure I would not do at $500 but it would depend on the details.
I don't need or want nutritional counseling but I'm curious as to what the rest actually involves.
Physical therapy and functional exercise can be great and most of us can benefit from those things.
I have used a trainer before who offers a program that may be similar to this. He has certifications qualifying him in areas regular trainers do not. It was very expensive.
Good luck - please update us after you learn more tomorrow.

Absolutely not.
Sounds like some BS the hospital cooked up to make money ~ all of that info can be found on the internet.

I wouldn't make a decision until I attended the "free"(?) introductory session, but in my experience, it can be VERY difficult for people over 60 to change life long perspectives on the subjects being addressed.
Therefore, I think that something that could give 60+s an alternative view on their lives might well be very valuable. If I needed it, worth $500 for sure.

We are offered a wellness program at work. We have a comprehensive blood, strength and stress test. The nurse reviews the blood work and makes nutritional recommendations. The fitness trainer reviews the strength and stress test and will make exercise recommendations and/or schedule 1:1 time with a trainer in the gym.
I don't think I'd pay $500 for a class at the hospital. The YMCA here offers senior exercise classes. I'd check that out.

Yikes! Just curious ... how much is this program if insurance covers nothing? If it is certified, or whatever the actual term is, why isn't insurance willing to pay for ALL of it?
I have a feeling that most attendees will walk out at the end of the introductory class with no interest in signing up.
IMO .... even if it's a very good program, it's just too much money.

@Tinkrbl44 I think without insurance it runs about $1500. I know it seems steep, but, with certified trainers and nutritionists, and an individual assessment, I think is is what something like this costs. Of course you can find cheaper... but, it may not be quite the same. That is why I am going to the class to be able to ask questions and really nail down everything involved.
I appreciate all the comments, and definitively will consider what everyone shares about this.

I reviewed the PDF online.
Sounds like a lot of excellent one-on-one time with many different people.
Here in Dallas, The Cooper Clinic (the Kenneth Cooper who coined the word 'aerobics' in the 70's) has an extended program like that....and I've always been interested that type of wellness education. You've piqued my interest!
I wouldn't let the price stop you. Education is priceless. Even if you only get one second of information which would change your life for the better, it's worth it.
Report back!!! 👍👍👍👍👍

@sidsmom and anyone else interested in an update....
SO, I went to the free introduction class yesterday... about 10 people were there. All older than me( I am 60) I felt like a youngster
and most of them were very out of shape and did not look really well..... They went around the circle of people and each person told what they wanted from the program.. most said they had diabetes, and other aliments and they wanted lose weight. The typical American lifestyle they wanted to better.. which is a good thing.
I found listening to the discussion that most of the program involves nutrition information.... reading food packages... eating out in restaurants.... which may be helpful for people clueless to how to eat right and knowing what is not good for you. I really do not need nutrition counseling. So 50% of the program for me would be just wasted time that I would rather spend on physical wellness
I could just joint the fitness part of it independently... they do have really state of the art work out equiptment and such. And then I could have a coach to assist me in achiving my goal of getting stronger and more flexible and work on balance. I will have to decide on this.. it would run me about $150.00 a month at least.. insurance may or may not pay some of the physical therapy. Will have to check into that. It is paid just month to month so if I did not feel it was working for me I could quit with no investment.
So that is where it stands.. now I will decide what I want to do.
