Re: 30 minute walk? does it matter at all?

@Helen Bach   Happy (belated) New Year to you, too. My doc says any time you're not just sitting on your behind is good for you. I count house cleaning, standing while painting, etc. I do also get my walks in and although I do shoot for an hour, there are plenty of times I just get in 30 minutes. Anything is better than nothing!

One never knows and it isn't something to put you in a funk thinking you'll die tomorrow if you don't do it.

I'll get beat up for this, but it's what I've seen in my long-lived experience. Next door neighbor died in his 50's on a walk.  The moral of the story is you could increase your odds but none of us call the shots.

@Sooner

No beat up/beat or dress down from me. You stated how you feel and what you have experienced over your years. That is pretty much the same as what I have done on this, and other forums, for umpteen years on this bulletin board.

Our experiences have been different, more than likely, the ways in which we've chose to live our lives have been different. I have seen and read about some of the same things you have mentioned, but my way of looking at them has been different.

Many look at living a more healthy lifestyle to add more chronological years to their lives. I, on the other hand, am not 1 of them. My outlook on health and physical fitness has absolutely nothing to do with what my chronological number will be when my trip here on earth is over.

As I have said, and most here have heard and/or seen. The destination is not the reason I have chosen my way of living, which is as healthy and physically fit as possible for me. It is the journey through life, whatever the end number of my chronological years, here on planet earth turns out to be.

Having spent much of my none working life around people that live similar lifestyles as myself. It is more an oddity for me to see people as they age, do less physically speaking, as opposed to them doing the same or more.

Having lived a more risk filled life than many, that is why my goal has always included physical fitness, over a more sedentary lifestyle. Will I live longer? Don't know, don't care. What I do know, that for me, just breathing and having a heartbeat is not living, it is existing.

Whatever one chooses there are no guarantees, of which I am aware, that you will live more chronological years. That has never and will never be a factor in my way of living.

And @Sooner , as always I like people that are straight shooters, and what they say is easily understood. Stay well now,

@chrystaltree, don't you have a knee replacement?  I thought I'd read that a vibrating plate wasn't good with hip/knee replacements 🤷🏼‍♀️

@tansy @

Yes I did  have a knee replacement several years ago.  I checked with my orthopedic specialist.  I sent him the link to mine which is Tony Little.  He said it was fine to use, he actually liked it a lot for muscle strength and balance.  He did caution me to use it sitting to avoid falling.  It came with hand weights which I use now.

Interesting, @chrystaltree.  I wouldn't have thought of using it sitting down.  I have a friend that loves her's but she still has her original joints 😜

Re: 30 minute walk? does it matter at all?

Walking 30 minutes 3-4 times a week really does make a difference. The main thing is to MOVE! Walking is the quintessential way to get moving....add more time when and if and when you are able....it feels so good to just get outside and go for a walk. Doesn't matter where or how far.l.just aim for 30 minutes and maybe add a couole of minutes a day as it gets easier. You will know it makes a difference because you will feel better.

I think it matters, if anything but to clear the mind and be in the moment with nature. It is wonderfully grounding - you can lift some cares off your mind by just really seeing with your eyes all around you.  So often we can not be present, really present where our focus is on the perfect leaf or the smell in the air and drown out the rest if only for a bit of respite.  Good luck on your journey.  Give it 20 days,  if it feel good continue.  Peace! and Happy New Year!

Re: 30 minute walk? does it matter at all?

As a person with terrible osteoarthritis, I can not walk briskly for 30 minutes. My neighborhood is kind of sloping one way so that hurts one of my knees to go up and then down the slope. But I so enjoy looking at the houses and the animals walking around, the birds chirping, the cars driving by. Do not use earbuds as you need to be able to hear what is around you. And hearing the sounds of nature is better than listening to the music on this outsie walk. I use an eliptical machine for 5 minutes at a time. I can't do much as it hurts my knee and my bad shoulder. I also get up and move around the house every hour or so. Just a brisk walk to the kitchen to get some water is good. Some people like my husband sit for hours and hours. Don't do that. Get yourself some very supportive and padded sole shoes (they will be expensive) as in orthopedic brands. These will help your feet and ankles and knees and back. Go slow, if you can get outside 10 minutes, do it. Just from your place up the block and back at your own pace. Start somewhere and don't judge yourself. Do what you can do.

Re: 30 minute walk? does it matter at all?

Years ago I walked my dog every day, weather permitting.  We didn't go at a blazing speed but we didn't saunter along either.  I did it because he needed the stimulation.  Weightloss for me turned into an added bonus.   Some days I had to drag myself out of the house to walk him but as we got into the walk, I was happy I did it.  I felt better, he was thrilled to be out and we had some of the best talks.  LOL

My dog now is a nightmare to walk and I really miss it.  I feel like a complete slug doing nothing and really need to get back to it.  The fresh air did me good and I just felt better both mentally and physically.

@Lipstickdiva

Like most others, after quitting something physically active you used to do! Getting started again is a big, or biggest challenge. Many have gotten used to doing different things in place of that movement.

For some that has become a part of their regular day, and changing it is not an easy thing to do. I believe almost everyone, at some point in their lives, experience the same or similar issues.

Like you, getting started after my many long term illnesses, I had to almost force myself to get started again. Once I got past that, which was not just a day, or even a few days, I got back into scheduling that time to regain everything I lost from my illnesses.

Keep telling yourself how good you felt when doing it regularly. Maybe that will help give you that boost you need. Worth a shot no!

True, there are no guarantees - either way.

There is however, Quality v/s Quantity.
