2020 was the Deadliest Year in U.S. History

The data is coming in. 2020 was the deadliest year in the nation’s history, the Associated Press reported. The 2020 numbers represent a 15% increase over 2019. This is the largest single-year percentage increase since 1918, when tens of thousands of U.S. soldiers died in World War I and hundreds of thousands of Americans died in a flu pandemic.

COVID-19 was the driver for this increase in deaths. It hit the hardest America's Black and Latino populations. Black Americans infected with COVID-19 die at 1.9 times the rate of whites. and Latinos die at more than twice the rate of whites, according to CDC data.

The U.S. average life expectancy went down by at least one year from 2019. Life expectancy at birth dropped to 77.8 years — the lowest since 2006. The decrease was even greater among blacks, whose life expectancy dropped by 2.7 years to 72 years, and Latinos, falling 1.9 years to 79.9 years, according to a CDC report.

The states with the highest life expectancy are Hawaii (81 years), California (80.8), New York (80.5), Minnesota (80.5), Connecticut (80.4), Massachusetts (80.1), Washington state (80), Colorado (80), New Jersey (79.8) and Rhode Island (79.8).

The states with the lowest life expectancy are West Virginia (74.4), Mississippi (74.6), Alabama (75.1), Kentucky (75.3), Tennessee (75.5), Louisiana (75.6), Oklahoma (75.6), Arkansas (75.6), South Carolina (76.5) and Missouri (76.6).

Uh, with a GLOBAL pandemic, what else would one expect? And, are we talking raw numbers or per capita? The population then vs. now is another wildly variable factor, plus population density in certain areas, how far people routinely travel, number of people coming in from other countries, etc.

Also need to tease out the number of deaths due to drug overdose or suicide .

No need to "tease" out anything. Deaths are deaths, it's just that deaths from the pandemic brought the numbers of deaths up to make 2020 the deadliest year. Of course there were deaths not related to the pandenic included in this statistic.

My BFF died January 8th. For some reason kept putting off sending her daughters a sympathy card. Well, last week I got a card - lucked out, the perfect card right off the bat.

What I was thinking when I went lookung for a sympathy card, was how few (two!) they had, yet couple of aisles for other cards. As I drove home, I could only think how awful it's been, so many people dying this year - last year, too, since the pandemic.

The American Rescue Act has been signed. Middle class and poor people will get monetary relief. About half of the children in poverty will be lifted out of poverty. About 11/2 million people a day are getting vaccinated now. I am hopeful that we never have to live another year like 2020. Get your vaccine when it is your turn.

Just because its in a news publication doesn't necessarily mean its true. Don't believe one article. Do your homework. I surely don't believe any stats out there.
