Donated hair for wigs, Need to learn how to WEN short hair

I love WEN.  I never had long hair, but WEN made all the difference. Three years ago whe my sister was diagnosed with end stage cancer, I tried to help her find a wig. They were so expensive that she couldn't afford one. While researching resources for her, I decided my best tribute to her would be to grow mine out for donation to a company that actually gives their wigs to cancer patients. Last week, I donated 10 inches of hair!

Now, I have fairly short hair. I'm so used to mixing Remoist with Styling Creme on the pony tail. With no pony tail, I have no idea what to do. I feels I'm missing steps now that my hair is short. I did a Remoist the first wash after the cut, thinking it might be the right thing to do. I ordered the textuizing spray.

Today was my second post-cut wash. I have a bottle of Mousse from the travel set, so I thought I'd use that. On auto-pilot, I pumped out 10 pumps and started applying it before I realized that was WAY TOO MUCH for my short, straight, fine hair.

I'm sure I'll get used to the short hair, but I have no idea how to alter the products for short hair. Most of the models have long hair, so most of the demonstrations Chaz does are geared to long hair.

Help?

@divadeb Way to go on donating your hair!! I don't have short hair but @World travler does. Hopefully she is not on vacation yet and can chime in and give you some suggestions.

@divadeb what an act of love! I'm sure your sister is both grateful and looks beautiful.

I started Wen with short hair. Full disclosure, I have never used remoist, but I did use the styling products. What I found was that half a pump of SC (which is still a decent amount) and 6ish of mousse were plenty. I'm not sure what your style is, or how short you mean by short, but this was great for volume and style for me. Best of luck on your short hair journey!

Call the. WEN number on all the bottles and ask them directly or go to any of their websites as they are always glad to help. Thanks to Chat I now have long healthy hair for the first time in my 71years. My stylist of 25+ years is amazed and no longer wants me to have perms. I have learned how to use the products by watching the shows.  Chas does tell us how much each model uses and some of the ladies have very short hair.  Good luck.

Re: Donated hair for wigs, Need to learn how to WEN short hair

@divadeb...I have short hair! You can refer to my profile picture.   It's a pixie, shorter in back but a little more length on the top & sides. I don't use remoist as a leave-in on a regular basis, but the rare times I do, I just use what would be equal to maybe 1/2 pump from a 16oz. bottle of CC.  Otherwise I use my seasonal CC as a leave-in. I tump my head upside down and run it through the ends, squeezing like Chaz demos on the long hair, then rake the rest through. I only use 1 pump styling Creme, which is why I have so much overstock!

Regarding mousse, I use 5 pumps and apply it in the same manner as described above.

I would experiment with it until the right amount. I know that's not much help, but I can say I go from pixie to shoulder length back to pixie regularly and I just play with the amount until I find what feels right. I have thick, normal-to-course wavy hair, if that helps.

Re: Donated hair for wigs, Need to learn how to WEN short hair

@divadeb I just had my hair whacked off a couple of days ago! ha! It is shorter than @SurferWife's picture. It looks a lot like the model Amanda, as far as length goes. The top of mine is a little shorter than hers.

One of the things I asked Chaz while at his salon was how do I manage using the products with really short hair that I was planning to eventually go back to? Since you aren't supposed to let the styling cream and other things touch the scalp, how can you do that with hair that is just barely sticking up?

I don't know how to describe it perfectly with words, but hopefully you will get the idea. He put the products in his hands like he always does, but demonstrated just barely touching the ends by moving his hands in opposite directions over the top of my hair, briskly, never once touching my scalp, back and forth. In fact, I could hardly tell that he touched my hair when he showed me. It was that light of a touch.

Before I used 10-20 pumps of mousse, a couple of pumps of styling cream, two pumps of glossing serum, a dab of Men's paste, plus my leave-in.

Now I mix in my hand a dime size of leave-in, small dab of styling cream, a tiny bit of glossing serum, just the smallest amount of Men's paste, and use the back and forth method of touching the ends of my hair.

It helps if after you wash your hair, that while it is still very wet you pull up/out the ends so they stick up straight, like a pixie haircut (or like you just got an electrical shock!). I would say the total amount of product in my hand, minus the mousse, is a little more than a nickel, but not as much as a quarter.

Then I let it stay that way for a while, and when I get out of the shower, while my hair is still damp, but not dripping wet, I put in around five pumps of mousse and I let that touch my scalp and comb thru, letting it dry further.

I really think I could get by without either the Men's paste or the styling cream, just using one of them. I don't think I need both.

When I get a chance, I'm going to try to call in when he is presenting and ask him to demonstrate how to put the products on very short hair, without touching the scalp. I have never seen him do that. Or perhaps you or someone else could ask him to demonstrate on Periscope and then post the link here so others could benefit.

Hope this helps!

Re: Donated hair for wigs, Need to learn how to WEN short hair

[ Edited ]

@divadeb Just thought of a couple of other things.

My hair is so short on top that my hair can only circle Chaz's small brush head one time. So the way he showed me to put the products on is the only way I would be able to do it without touching the scalp.

Also, he always shows pressing/squeezing the products into the hair by twisting the long hair on his models. What I do after pulling the wet hair up straight, like a mohawk, I grab the ends and make a fist to force the product in.

I also tried it one time by putting my palms together, as though I was praying or going go clap, with the hair between the palms. Although I believe that probably did a good enough job of squeezing the product into the hair, I prefer just grabbing it with my fist, which allows me to manipulate it with my fingers.

If you have any questions, I'll be here thru 6/21 and then out of the country for six weeks. I will, however, be checking on the forum from time to time to see what is happening and seeing what Chaz is presenting for his last few presentations of the month. And am sure I'll be posting as time permits (right after I have Skyped with my dogs!).

By the way, I think it was a wonderful thing you did by donating your hair. Heart
