Compression bags help a lot. If you pack lots of layers, it makes it easier to handwash the smaller items. Also, if you are in nice (2+ stars) hotels, they can send out same-day laundry for you. I wouldn't waste a couple of hours doing laundry even if it meant buying more clothes.

Often, I've found that laundry service is shockingly inexpensive and worth time saved.
