It seems to me that those who enjoy these Mexico or Central American or Island resorts look at the risk with skeptic doubt.
Many say things like: There are dangers everywhere-even in the US--The victims did not use good judgement--It's very safe if you stay on the property. They escort you from the airport. Why do I need an escort from the airport and must stay on the compound?
A young college age friend was attacked and his designer tee shirt and sneakers were taken. There was a lady that tried to report on trivago an assult at a Mexico resort. They would not accept the negative review. I don't think we know how dangerous these area can be. We know the tragic incidents.
Well, these resorts are in high crime countries. Recent reports indicate that much of the alcohol is tainted. Not to mention that law enforcement is not up to American standards. We all have to judge the risks and what we are comfortable with in travel.

@Lipstickdiva I do not believe that the Delaware woman's husband did anything to her except find her. However, just because he reported her missing means nothing if he did it. Again, I believe that he did not harm his wife and that someone else did, but a way to cover his tracks if he did it would be to report her missing at the front desk.

@granddi It is insulting to make the assumption that those of us who frequent resorts are somehow being intentionally skeptical or doubtful of crime or the safety risks associated with staying at these places or traveling in general. I believe that for most of us, the opposite is true. We are more alert and cautious than infrequent travelers, because we’ve experienced so much in our travels. Our senses are heightened, and we are always aware of what is happening around us. When we say, “this kind of thing happens everywhere,” it isn’t because we are trying to justify traveling to a dangerous place, it is because we know it is true. We just choose not to live in fear and sit home, because bad things happen in the world.

I've been on a cruise with my DH the last 3 years. I am very cautious on those ships and don't go wandering around by myself though back hallways, etc.
I see people who let their young children roam ships by themselves. I also belong to FB cruise groups and the question comes up often from members asking if it's okay for their children to go for the day on the ship or wander by themselves. I'm always dumbfounded people even ask and then moreso when people say yeah, it's okay.
There could be all kinds of people on those ships. Some nice, some maybe not so nice and it wouldn't take much for someone to grab a little kid. On our last cruise, DH and I got a little turned around when we got off the elevator and ended up walking all through the back hallways on one of the decks to get to the other side of the ship. We were up all the hallways where the cabins are. As I walked, I commented to my DH how easy it would be for someone to open up a cabin door and snatch a woman or child into their cabin.
But, there are also countries and areas of countries that are more dangerous than others and I have no desire to put myself into that type of possible danger. I don't need to see anyplace that bad.

@SXMGirl, I understand that completely. I am more taken aback by the response of the person who took the complaint at the front desk. No regard for the woman at all.

@Lipstickdiva I absolutely agree with you about the response from the front desk. It is unfortunate that there was no regard for this woman and her family. It is also unfortunate that this mindset is prevalent in some/many countries. People expect to be safe as possible when they travel, and we expect the employees of a resort to be concerned if someone goes missing. Not because of the bottom line or bad publicity, but because they should care about people.
Another problem that I see is watching HHI. They make it sound like all of these areas are paradise and that anyone can move right in and get a job. Absolutely untrue for too many people.

Anyone see this? Another woman died at the same hotel days before the married couple did.

I wonder if a disgruntled employee is poisoning the alcohol in the mini bar to destroy the resort’s reputation? You’d think some agency like the CDC would sweep in, confiscate all the alcohol in the resort, and analyze it. I guess if the government of the DH doesn’t want that, it won’t happen.

About 3 years ago a friend and I were looking to travel to DR. The place we were looking to book is the Bahia Principe, where these last 3 people have died. Yikes!
First there was the couple that had the "car accident" a few months back, the woman that was beaten and now these 3 deaths.

@Lipstickdiva A couple who made friends with the couple who died in the car crash said they were all partying together just hours before the crash and that the couple was nervous to have to make the trip to the airport in the middle of the night. They were drunk and drove off a cliff.
