I'm not a traveler, but I wanted to compliment you on the wonderful work you do organizing your posts, and providing great info.

Thank you

Completely agree with you @IMW. I neither travel a lot nor post much here BUT, I've learned so much from reading this forum. I also love being able to "travel" with the posters when they share their trips.

We are driving to the SC coast at the end of the month!

JeanLouiseFinch......Schepler's is a good ferry line.  We have used them also.  I haven't been there in awhile so not sure if there are any new ones.  Have a great time visiting!  I would love to move back to Michigan where we have extended family and friends.  But, we have our kids and grandkids here (Chicago) so doesn't make sense to move back and away from them.

If I am not mistaken both ferry lines are owned by the same company. I believe they depart from two places...one being Macinac City and the other maybe St. Ignace.

When you are walking the hill to the hotel (or any where on the Island) watch out for the bikers....they ride pretty fast and there have been accidents. Also, there is good shopping and lovey areas off of main street too. Be sure to get a map and walk around.  The Hotel used to run a restaurant back in the woods...they take you there by wagon...lovely.

It will be chilly and windy but beautiful.

Since I am on the subject I can highly recommend other areas of Michigan. Harbor Springs, Traverse City, Petoskey, Charlevoix and Leland. You can easily see them all in a week staying at a relatively inexpensive resport like Boyne Mountain if you have a car. All beautiful.

@JeanLouiseFinch

I can't wait to hear about your trip to Mackinaw Island.  A few years ago we stayed at the Grand Hotel for one night with a group of friends in October.   It was fun looking in each other's room at the Grand Hotel - they are all very different.  We took a horse drawn tour of the island which I would highly recommend.

We went to Art Prize in Grand Rapids on Friday (our first time). It was very cool!

@itsmagic We're pretty "scheduled" for our retreat, but hope to get there early enough to enjoy a little of the area.  The horsedrawn tour and rocking on the front porch are what I'd like to do in that little bit of free time.  I'm actually looking forward to "dressing" for dinner.  Not that I'm even remotely the fancy type, but it'll be special with everyone all shined up and being somewhat elegant and sophistcated..

Just purchased the Eagle Creek Travel Bug Mini Pack with RFID.  Has locking zippers and an RFID passport pocket and a soft phone pocket.  Has outside mesh pocket for water bottle, inside main compartment soft pocket for tablets.  Got really good reviews for a day pack whether for hiking, day trips, and for travel.  Think this may solve the problem I was having on this last trip as to what to put my stuff in if I was just walking around and a regular sized backpack would be too much/big.  Having the Can-Can and a camera cross body on me was just too much and felt awkward.  Being able to have the backpack and then just the camera cross-body may be easier for me.  I never go hiking but may just have to go on one so I can test this bag out!  LOL  Will let you know what I think of it when it arrives.

Oh and another thing I forgot to add, looks like it would fit perfectly under an airline seat so if I wanted to use it as my personal bag and then put the LUG PJ overhead, think it would work fine.

@JeanLouiseFinch  Dressing up and having a five course meal in the Grand Hotel dining room was very enjoyable (and we're not the fancy type either).
