Re: Tips for New York City travel

[ Edited ]

Jeans are absolutely fine.

I personally prefer NY Waterways to the Circle Line,  but they will both give you a nice view of The Statue of Liberty, UN, Ellis Island, Trade Ctr, etc.  Just a few suggestions of things to do...  obviously,  you won't get to them all, but pick things you'd like to do depending on the weather and your interests.   WALK WALK WALK!

Intrepid Air and Sea Museum, Trade Center, 9/11 Memeorial, Trinity Church (close by) and Wall Street.  Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick's Church across the street.  Grand Central,  NY Public Library on 42nd St (amazing bldg) and the park in back,  The Highline, Empire State Bldg, Chrysler Bldg, Flat Iron Bldg (you can sit in the street across from the Flat Iron and get a coffee at Eataly or cheese and nibbles at the park there), Washington Sq Park in the Village and all the side streets (McDougal, Bleeker ... ), Union Sq Market (check the days and times they are open),  5th & Madison Aves,  all the amazing Museums,  Lincoln Center (you're close).  There is a booth in Times Square that sells last minute theater tickets for a fraction of the cost.  Also,  Chelsea, Chinatown and Soho are other wonderful areas in the city.

Just have fun.    Walking is amzing, with so much to see.   Do not eat at any chain restaurants!

Edited to add...  THE YANKEES are home.  Tickets to Yankee Stadium would be an amazing experience if you can get them.   GO YANKEES!!!!

I happen to see a pedicab this afternoon - the sign posted $6.99 per minute

for that amount - I expect to see a shirtless Ryan Gosling as my driver

Re: Tips for New York City travel

@nyc1

This is a wonderful list.   My best friend and I are going back in August for our 6th annual girls NYC trip.   We have done all of this and more several times and never tire of any of it.  After 5 years in a row, we think we have done 99% of the tourist things.    One thing we are doing for the first time is going to a Yankees game.  I grew up a Yankees fan in Dallas, until the Rangers came to town and we're going to a Rangers-Yankees game.  I'm thrilled beyond belief.   I always wanted to see a game in the old stadium and never made it.   I think this one will do just fine.  Smiley Wink  We're going early for the stadium tour.

We are doing our own lounge and cocktail tour this year.   Spending a day in Brooklyn,  doing our own walking tour of "cool streets" in Brooklyn and Manhattan I found online,  eating eating and more eating.

We've done the short Circle Line boat tour and enjoyed it so much we're doing the full one this year.  Will see a show or two and a comedy club.

The rest of the time will be just walking neighborhoods, checking out street markets and whatever looks interesting or fun.

To the OP, I second walking the Highline.   We loved that and may do it again.  We also enjoyed the self tour of Grand Central Station.   We did a pedicab tour of Central Park at a flat rate and loved it.  The peddler was very interesting and entertaining and it was loads of fun.

I'd suggest going to the top of something:  Empire State or Rockefeller Center and see the city from there.   Spectacular.   We also loved loved Ellis Island.

Have a wonderful time in the best city in America.  Boston is second.  Smiley Wink

Thank you all. I am copying your wonderful

suggestions to take with me.

We are flying Delta...is checking a suitcase a nightmare? I can probably get by with a carryon but we are there 5 days. Your advice on baggage claim and drop off issues at LaGuardia?

Assume the subway is the recommended way to get to Yankee Stadium. Is it relatively safe in that area.

There's just no way to say it nicely...LaGuardia is a dump. And that's being unfair to all the finer dumps everywhere. Better than JFK or EWR, but still a dump. Delta has done some extensive renovations to their terminals, but it's still extremely crowded and busy all the time. And then there's the road construction outside of the terminal, which makes things even worse. If you have a smartphone, download the Delta app if you haven't already done so. You can check-in on-line at 24 hours from departure, and check the status of your flight to find out which terminal you're departing from. Make sure your ride drops you at the correct terminal! Please allow yourself a minimum of two hours to check your bag and make it thru security, even if you have TSA PreCheck. If you can avoid checking your bag, you'd be wise to do so.

@Bridgegal  You are going to have a BLAST at Yankee Stadium.  I was at the old Yankee Stadium several dozen times, and each time it was exhilarating and gave me the chills.  It was the 8th Wonder of the World!  The new Yankee Stadium looks like a Las Vegas casino from the outside, but is FABULOUS inside.  Same excitement ...   they moved the top part of the old stadium to this one so you feel the history.  Monument park is unbelieveable.  HAVE FUN...   even if you root for the Rangers!!!!!   You must report back on your trip when you return.  Funny enough,  I'm going to see the Yankees here in Chicago August 8th when they come in to play the White Sox....   GO YANKEES!

Are you walking across the Brooklyn Bridge?  I've never done that, but will be the next time we're in visiting my sister, who lives on the UWS.   If you ever get up there, you must go to Zabar's.  It's a store unlike any other, and Patsy's for pizza.  OMG!photo (002).JPG

JMO

As for LGA being a better dump than EWR; I'd take Newark any day over LaGuardia!

You can get into the city faster from EWR than either LGA or JFK.
