Re: Tips for New York City travel

@wonderfulworld

There are plenty of yellow cabs all lined up at the airports. I believe it is metered and via google - looks like $40 + tip.  There is Uber and Super Shuttle as options also. I'm sure you can see how much and see if it is worth it.

It may be easier to find a cab than look for your Uber driver

Re: Tips for New York City travel

wonderfulworld ..... there is another thread here where someone asked about NYC Day Tours...you may want to check that out.  I love visiting NYC....fun city....my only caution that I have mentioned before is taking cabs.  MOST drivers are friendly and honest.  Unfortunately, I had a bad experience on my last trip....a slick driver took my cash, slipped a twenty down and then held up rest saying I did not pay enough.  My word against his.....I ended up giving more.  Be sure to count money out to the driver so there is no question.  Cabs are easy to pick up outside baggage pick-up at LGA.  The cab scam thing may no longer be a problem as I reported incident to NY authorities.   I have had many good cab experiences there as well but I like to give travelers a "heads up".

You will have a really good time!!!  Great city!  Enjoy!

Should we take a cab from LGA to our hotel? We are flying in together and will have suitcases.

I use Eastern Car Service to/from LGA. It's a flat rate charge, regardless of how long it takes to get to/from my destination, so you're not sitting in traffic with the meter running. I set my ride reservations on their app (they also have a website), they monitor my incoming flight and dispatch the driver to pick me up. You do need to have a cell phone so that the driver can contact you.

Good luck flying into/out of LGA!  It's a mess.  Bring walking shoes.  Between 10th and 11th it's a good walk to anything.  I believe the "fleet is in" over Memorial Day weekend so you should see many sailors in the street.  Yes, skip the pedicab and walk through Central Park--much more enjoyable.  Take a cab to/from LGA.  And take the Staten Island ferry if it's a nice day.  It's FREE and has great views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline.  The 3 hour Circle Line tour is also great.  Have fun!!!

Re: Tips for New York City travel

You are in a great location! At Columbus Circle, there is a Whole Foods in the Time Warner Building, and I'll walk across the circle to Central Park to picnic.

The Food Court at the Plaza, just a few blocks over on the next corner of Central Park, is nice, too. You'll love the tour of Central Park.

If you are on Groupon, I always check for discounts on events. I bought the self guided tour of Grand Central Sation, which was so enjoyable I would do again.

in answer to your question about jeans, wear whatever you want. I take several pairs of black, or dark yoga type pants.

I find the ride in from LGA when Manhattan comes into view absolutely thrilling every time I visit!

The last time I went, first time, I had a problem with my legs swelling on the plane, I was so disappointed as it really limited my walking for the 3 days I was there. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, so, for what it's worth, I recommend wearing compression knee highs on the plane.

Yes, there will be plenty of people on the streets.  Just take the usual precautions of any big city.  I believe My Fair Lady is playing at the Vivian Beaumont theater in Lincoln Center.  You won't be too far away from there so if you're so inclined, seeing the show or taking a tour of the complex would be another suggestion.

I saw My Fair Lady in April - it was magic. Beautiful set.

The ballet season is also underway at Lincoln Center

We saw Warhorse at Lincoln Center a few years ago. We got there early to find Tom Paxton giving a free concert in the courtyard - nice surprise. So, if you decide to see My Fair Lady there, see if there are any free shows before or after your play.
