With the world focused on this area last week, I happily thought back to the time I spent there.

Did you love "The Shipping News," the book or the movie? It depicted Newfoundland very well.

St. John's and environs offer a relaxed setting. Nobody bothers you. The locals love telling jokes. Wonderful music in the pubs. You can try local specialties like fried cod lips and tongues. You can eat a different cod dish at every meal.

Places to stay at every budget level.

You'll return home satisfied.

@PickyPicky3    I once spent 2 days at the air force base at Goose Bay.  Didn't get to see or do a darn thing except play slot machines in the officer's club.  I came back with pockets full of Canadian nickels.

I lived on Harmon AFB in Newfoundland when I was a kid. Had to be 1962-1965 when we were there. Have home movies there going down the big snow packed hill out back on toboggans. Left for Hickam AFB Hawaii in 1965. Have a lot of home movies from Hawaii.

@PickyPicky3 , I think you mean cod cheeks and tongues?  A delicacy to locals.

I spent a lot of time in Newfoundland.  A very interesting Province but I don't think I could live there.  Coastal in the northwest Atlantic.  Cold, looong winters.  They plan events like Regatta Day depending on the weather...

Held on Quidi Vidi Lake in St. John's, Newfoundland, the Regatta is scheduled for the first Wednesday of August. If weather and wind conditions are not suitable, the event is postponed until the next suitable day.

@Lilysmom1   I have a memory of trying cod lips at the foodcourt in a mall, but I may be wrong.

Re: St. John's, Newfoundland

DS moved to St. John's in '04 for his degree at MUN and decided to stay there because he loves the area and people. DH and I are planning to visit him this summer.  Besides seeing our DS, we are so looking forward to fish 'n chips and  cod au gratin.
