Sandia Peak Tram

[ Edited ]
  • Sister, niece and I also rode the tram to the top of the Sandia Mts., a requirement for tourists.  It was my third trip in three years + many before..  Its always a thrill but not really scary, and I'm very sensitive to heights.  Great views and cool enough for jackets up there.

@Sooner. I said that too the first time but surrendered to social pressure and went.  I'm so glad I did and now it's sort of routine.

When we got to the top, we were surprised to have a young man climb down from the top of the car.  They ride the top frequently with a harness to inspect the cables.

I was in ABQ for a brief while and I went up on that tram a few times. I found it exciting and very beautiful while it moved and  on the landings or platforms or whatever they're called. Well worth my time for the peaceful set of mind the  beauty of the elevation brought. I have no reaction to heights. Others' experience might be different!

That was a highlight of our trip last year along with having lunch at the restaurant.  Beautiful views.

@Kachina624

Did you ever ride the Royal Gorge tram? That's pretty scary, too.  When the wind blows it gets to swaying back and forth. When I went on that tram there was a nun in the car with us and she was doing the sign of the cross the entire time.

@Kachina624

We saw something similar one Sunday AM in Switzerland at a ski mountain.  He was in a tuxedo....never saw a harness.  We stood at the window and prayed or held our hands to our hearts that he would not fall off into the Alps below.

I wouldn't even be able to consider that tram!  I'm such a scaredy cat!   That picture is beautiful but still scare me!

I'm glad you had a great visit from your sister and niece @Kachina624 !

@jlkz. The Sandia tram was originally designed and built by a Swiss company.  This Spring they shut it down for a long time and redid the whole thing, same Swiss company.  It's the second longest aerial tramway in the US. There's one place where you're about 1,000 ft off the ground.  Takes about 20min.  They shut it down if it's stormy or windy.  We got stuck up there for a couple hours once during a thunderstorm.
