@Mom2Dogs   Are you near one of the entrances for the Amtrak Auto Train to Florida?  That's another way to get to Florida and take your own car.

 

I have never personally done it, but my family has since they have kids and need a lot of stuff.  I fly and meet them there since it's just me.

Well, on the bright side you have PLENTY of coastline between N and S Carolinas.  I live along the coast south of the Wilmington beaches.  I really think anywhere from the Outer Banks down to Sunset Beach in NC would be nice for you.

 

My experience is that SC beaches are a little more touristy and if you don't want a lot of people, I'd stick to NC.

 

After Labor Day is prime hurricane season as others have mentioned.  You'll get a better rate, but you do run the risk of having your vacation blown to bits (pun intended!!).  Most will say that the hurricanes blow in real quick and blow out real quick, and odds are that is what they will do, but the damage left in their wake is what is unpredictable.
