I think it is a given that most people want clean rooms, clean and comfortable beds, quiet and good AC/heating.
I want: a tub, a frig that actually gets cold, microwave is nice, a keurig is good, comfortable chairs(not just a desk chair), black out drapes.
How important is free parking, ice machines, breakfast?
I guess it depends on the length of the stay.

I think it also depends on where you are staying.
And even if I were to scrub and disinfect a tub, you still wouldn't find me climbing into it.

I'm finding it hard to answer because I agree that it depends where I would be staying. But I think in general, other than what you mentioned, clean room, comfy beds, etc.) I like the option of room service and I do like a nice view and a balcony. Probably a little fridge would be a nice.

@granddi I remember as a kid, a swimming pool was a must.....I fondly remember going down to the end of the hall and filling our ice bucket up. The water glasses in the room had freshly wrapped paper on them. The toilet seat had a paper ribbon over it.
As kids, we would look in the drawers for the "free" stationery and postcards along with the Bible.
Now, what is important is a clean, upscale room with good locks. Lol

Most of those things are standard in American hotel rooms that don't charge by the hour..lol. But I never had a Keurig, that would be nice. I haven't been in a hotel that didn't have a fridge in 20 years. I like a microwave and free breakfast but they aren't necessities. I think a pool is a necessity now. At this stage of our lives we want comfort and luxury in our hotels.

FREE "real" breakfast
Room service
Outdoor and/or indoor "heated" pool
Airport shuttle
Bathroom sink that does not clog
"Real" hangers in the room closets.
The Sun Hotels in So. Africa provides (2) thick white long terry cloth robes & slippers in every room. And they EXPECT you to take them w/you when you check out.

I have gotten squeamish about sleeping in beds where thousands of other people have slept. Probably because I doubt the bed linens are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized between guests. I try not to think about it too hard.
I've been to a couple of nice hotels that had Keurigs. Love that.
The free breakfast is important to me and hubby. It's so convenient.
Good soundproofing is also important. Last year I traveled alone on a brief trip.Stayed at a popular chain hotel (Hampton Inn or something like that)
The couple on the other side of my bed was going at it all night. So hard that MY bed was shaking. And I could hear everything. 😁😳

It has to have at least 4 stars, mainly 5. The mattress is important, Down comforter, pillow, room service, and large room. Luckily we seem to visit the same cities so we know the hotels most of the time. It also has to be quiet room, not across or next to elevator, maids workroom, the ice machine and the freeway.,Lol. I have been there, done that. The elevator in front of our door was quite an experience. Noise all night!! People get out drunk, and chat with friends before they go to their own room. The freeway situation many times was horrible. One time our nedroom faced the freeway. We heard every car entering on ramp, and omg the motorcycles jolt us awake. The echoes over the sound wall. We usually get a one bedroom suite. I do not like the standard room with the small one room. I splurge when I go travel. Makes it fun and nice for me. The nice, quiet room means as much to me as our destination.

We usually shower rather than bathe, but it's nice to have that option. I can't recall the last time we only had a shower in our room. I need a microwave and a fridge. Hotel Keurigs annoy me. They don't work the same as my home version. I normally don't eat breakfast but sometimes will when we travel. DH eats breakfast everyday. The breakfast that's included with the room rate needs to include eggs and some kind of breakfast meat. We'd skip it and go to a restaurant if all the hotel offered was danishes and juice or cold cereal - either that, or I'd find out in advance and plan accordingly by bringing our own breakfast foods. I don't want to pay for parking, that should be included in the room rate. Ice should be available too. I like a nice lobby area where we can get out of the room and maybe visit with other travelers or just watch the activity going on.
ETA - plenty of USB ports to charge our phones and tablets at the same time.
