Merida Mexico

Anyone been to Merida Mexico?  If so, can you answer a few questions:

 

1)  Do I need a car?

 

2) Any reccommendations for a hotel close to the ciy center?

I lived in Merida many years ago when I was in college, but it's become much more developed and tourist oriented since then. Even so, based on my dated knowledge, I wouldn't drive there on a dare.
