Their tourism commissions probably pay to be put on the list. I remember a 10 Best Steak Houses in America where the restaurants on the list paid, as an ad, to be on the list. The be clear, the list was actually a paid ad.

@Mindy D I know this is off topic. But if you see a lovely plaque in your doc, dentist, optometrist, office that says "Voted Best Doctor in ____________. (like Kansas, US)., this is bought by the office.

There are tiers of awards from plaques sent to the office up and including photo of famous person actually handing the award to the doc.

Travel and Leisure Magazine have the same "Lists of Best Places"

The Lonely Planet guides have been around for 50 years and are well-respected by serious, experienced world travelers.

To suggest this is a paid ad probably reflects the poster's lack of familiarity with Lonely Planet.

Best can be so subjective, even if you know the criteria used.

Arguably, with the Olympics there in 2024, Paris would be the last place I’d want to be. Busier than usual and skyrocketing prices beforehand (and probably after.) But I’m guessing that’s the actual reason it’s on the list (other than just the fact it’s Paris, that is ☺️)

edited to add...had to look at itinerary, but looks like I will be going to one of those places in 2024 (but it may be just to fly out... )

Totally agree with you about Philadelphia. I live about 30 minutes south of there and crime is through the roof. Carjacking seems to be a regular ongoing problem. My niece goes to school in Prague and her parents visit often. They absolutely love it there and pictures they post are incredible. I’d go there in a heartbeat.

I can see Paris & Prague as I love both cities. We were in Mostar in 21 & it’s interesting, historically but nothing much to do but visit the famous bridge. Nowhere near Paris & Prague for food, culture & beauty.

I’ve been to KC & Philly and nice cities but not exceptional & many cities are much nicer like Charleston, NO, Boston & many more.

The others, I have no plans to see any of them.
