Since the possibility exists that you can get held up at scanner (or person ahead of you), having that purse/wallet zipped in carry-on luggage makes me feel safer.

As soon as I am done showing my ticket and ID, which is before you go through the scanner, I put it all back into a zip pocket of the bag I carry on and put under the seat in front of me.
