I have been to nyc many times. The hop on hop off busses offer a great overview, but you may have to wait for a while for one to come by. 

 

You may may want to try a bus tour to get an iverview and then use the subway to get around. The subway is very easy and much faster than taxis and much cheaper. .

 

we have always use a car service from the airport.

 

Be aware public restrooms are very few and far between.

We took a bus tour in NYC last year. I loved it and would highly recommend it, just for the history of the city alone. As a result of the tour, we added several site seeing spots to our itinerary. The tours are not cheap, so I would advise getting on the bus as early as possible so you get your money's worth.
