I checked “Europe Thru The Back Door” out at the library and am finding numerous helpful suggestions or things to think about.

Rick Steves is pretty good at how-to advice for Europe and I've used a number of his books on specific countries over the year.  I also like the Eyewitness Travel series put out by DK and have the Norway title checked out from my local library.  Great color photos, maps and street by street guides of sights in cities and towns.

My favorite series to carry in my purse while touring are the Knopf Mapguides.  These are stiff paper books with fold out maps and brief text of major cities.  Good to organize sights in a city that are near each other.

@Wobin
Thank you for that additional information. I am not familiar with Knopf. I went to AAA for some maps.

Have you narrowed places you are thinking of traveling?

I got a UK map at AAA and it helped me select a town for a stay later this year.  I love looking at maps and reading place names.
