Under the "present situation"...I'd change my cash at the border (or airport)

You'd be better off to pay in Canadian. My daughters just got back from PEI and American Money is worth more than Canadian.

Yes, especially due to the exchange rate US money is welcome.

Last week I was in Canada with five other gals and we had lunch where I paid for the meal using my credit card, which included a tip.
The receipt was in Canadian dollars, but when I went online my credit card amount was converted to U.S. dollars. It's easier for me to do it that way. I do that in other countries.....use the credit card and include the tip.
I suppose they would take U.S. dollars as a tip, but then they would lose in the conversion; at least, right now they would lose as I believe the U.S. dollar is worth more. I could be wrong on what our dollar is worth compared to their dollar.

@danedylan Have a great time. Ottawa is one of my favorite cities. Have been there multiple times.
Montreal only once.

I live close to the border. If you have a large bank near you, they may have Canadian dollars on hand to exchange or you can order in advance. You can get the exchange rate at XE dot com.
Let your cc company know in advance you are traveling.

Also check if you have a credit card that does not charge a conversion fee.

If you leave a cash tip in American dollars then you are forcing the recipient to make a trip to a bank to change the money. Nice nice.

I would not. It would be the same if a Canadian came to US and tipped with Canadian money. The server would have to make an effort to convert it. Not good.
