Going there the end of August.....bringing my 5 year old son
Other than taking a boat tour to see the ponies....what else is there to do with a young child?

My Brother's Father-in-law owned property in Wachapreague, VA. The property was used only during the summer. Wachapreague is also on the Eastern Shore.
He had his own horses brought over for the summer, on the property. So of course we rode them. He also had a boat. So we went out on the boat a few times. Also the best fishing I ever encountered in my life.
And you can't forget - eating. Lots of crab.
We meant to go to Chincoteague but somehow we never made it. We went to Wachapreague for several years. And always found things to do. Oh, I learned to pay pool too.
You will find lots of stuff to do. A 5 year old likes playing in the sand and enjoying the water. There is plenty of that.

@qvc chick I live about 45 minutes from there. It's a very small town. One way in one way out. Not much there. Never been to the beach there. For kids, Maui Jacks water park. My daughter takes her kids during the summer. Food - to me it's ok. Since we have local water access, we get our own fish and crab at the dock, caught that day.
If you get a crabcake, make sure it's MD crabmeat and not "Maryland style". Several area restaurants have been bringing in overseas crabmeat.
The ponies on the Virginia side are penned it. Visible by tours. If you want to see them live roaming around, you can visit Assateague Beach in MD. The only thing is the ponies roam the beach and I'm not much on wildlife, so I can't remember the last time I was there. You pay a fee to get in, park your car and head to the beach.
Have fun!

The beach is beautiful! The bike paths in the park are really nice and we saw so many ponies while we were riding. The boat trip is fun - we went with Captain Dan and he had lots of great information about the pony herds. If you like ice cream, check out the Island Creamery - we loved it! Have fun!
