Blue Ridge Parkway Fall Foliage Trip

Has anyone done this?  DH, who never has said that he wants to visit anywhere special, said tonight that he would like to do this in October.  His concern, and he wants to do the entire parkway, is whether it will be difficult to find nice lodging because of the crowds.  We will be taking our dog.

For those who have done all or part, or who live in any of the areas along the parkway, any suggestions on what to see and do would be appreciated.  I have looked online and will probably head over to AAA this week, but info from those who have made the trip would be invaluable.

The next time that I hear salt and ice together, it better be in a margarita!

Re: Blue Ridge Parkway Fall Foliage Trip

I drove most of the parkway in '98 with my parents in their motor home.  Never again.  It was boring....nothing but trees mile after mile.  Mom and I both got a car sick feeling looking out as those trees went by.  There's almost nothing on the parkway except trees.  You have to get off to get gas, food, etc.  We went in the early summer, but I bet trees would be pretty in fall.

@SXMGirl  LOVED it!  We have done it several times, Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive up close to DC.  It is spectacular in the fall.

Do note where you can get on and off, and plan your night's stays carefully! I would go again in a heartbeat.

@Kachina624Your dog is beautiful.  What's the breed?

@spent2much.  Thank you.  He was a registered tri colored rough collie.  He died about 3 years ago.

@Sooner. It is good to hear that you enjoyed your trip.  Thanks!  I did look online at quite a few suggested stops along the way, and I will be headed over to AAA this week to see what info they have.  I think that Asheville is the most pet friendly along the route, and I think it ends somewhere in that area.  DH wants to do the entire route.

If you enjoy waterfalls, check out Transylvania County, near Brevard.

@Kachina624:  Many years ago we had a Merle Blue Sheltie (small world).

@SXMGirl - I'm pretty sure the Omni in Asheville is a pet friendly hotel
