Re: Anyone Live In Philly, PA?

[ Edited ]

The Liberty Bell & Independence Hall are in the same area which is a part of the National Park Service.  Included in that area is The National Constitution Center (a good interactive and somewhat newer museum), Congress Hall, a Jewish Museum and Museum of the American Revolution.

The Philadelphia Flower show which is among the largest in the country is held for a week in March.  However beware of the crowds!  People are usually sick of winter by then and the flower show gets insanely crowded!

As for a cheesesteak, you have very touristy Genos & Pat's which are big competitors across the street from each other in south Philly.  I love a good cheeseteak but I'm afraid that I can't suggest a place.  When I want one I just go to my local hoagie shop in town.  However someone might be able to suggest a good place to go.

Another fun place is the Reading Terminal Market.  It's near the Convention Center and offers cheesesteaks, Amish food and a wide variety of many food offerings.

The Rocky steps are in the front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  It's a very good art museum and I would check to see what show is running while you are there.  It's been a long time since I went and the last time I was there I went with my DD to see the Salvador Dali show.

Outside of Philly is the King of Prussia Mall.  Just think of a high end luxury store and it's probably there.  The anchor department stores are Macys, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus & Bloomingdales.  It's not far from the Q in West Chester.

Longwood Gardens is another must see in my opinion!  However there isn't as much going on outdoors at that time of year.

On the northern suburbs of Philly is Bucks County (my home).  We have historic Washington Crossing, New Hope with lots of interesting shops, restaurants and theater along the Delaware River and Peddler's Village a very cute shopping area.

I went to dinner with a friend to Peddler's Village last night and the village was filled with holiday lights and we checked out the gingerbread house display.  They have something going on throughout the year.

I can't give any links but for all of these places in they each have a website.

Re: Anyone Live In Philly, PA?

I was busy today, so I did not see this post until later tonight, but you certainly received a TON of great recommendations.

Philadelphia is actually a huge city, spread out over 142 square miles, with many unique neighborhoods. Here we call the "downtown" area Center City, and it is very walkable and laid out in a sensible manner. Broad Street (14th Street) runs North to South, and the major streets that cross it are Market, Chestnut and Walnut.  Most of the shopping areas are all around these major street intersections.

The Art Museum and the Rocky statue are located near 2600 Parkway (26th Street), and past that is what we call University City, home of Penn and Drexel, as well as our Amtrak station.

The historic area with the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Ben Franklin's house and church,  Betsy Ross house, Constitution Center, etc., are located down near the 300 block (3rd street). We have a nice waterfront, and across the river in Camden, NJ is the Adventure Aquarium.

We have many sports venue and famous teams, and last weekend I went to see our fabulous Philadelphia Ballet perform the Nutcracker at the Academy of Music, the oldest opera house in the US, opened in 1857.  Yes, British kings and queens have attended performances!

There are more excellent restaurants than I could possibly name or recommend, but strangely enough, I rarely eat cheesesteaks!!

We are one to two hours from NJ beaches, NYC visits, and Pocono mountains, and as described, we have many wonderful shopping malls nearby, with King of Prussia being one of the  largest in the country.

Yes, I do recommend visiting lovely Longwood Gardens, but it can be a lot of walking. Nearby in Delaware to also visit is Winterthur, home of the famous DuPont family

We frequently go to Lancaster just for the day, and I recommend the Amish Farm and House tour, the Tanger outlet stores, and dining at an Amish restaurant like Miller's.

I travel around the world, but I love living in Philadelphia!

Re: Anyone Live In Philly, PA?

Another Philadelphian here, born and raised.  There are many good suggestions here, so that's pretty much been covered.

I have to say, unfortunately, I agree with @MoonieBaby that you need to be careful and be aware of your surroundings at all times.  I don't recall if you said where you'll be staying, but please do your research as there are sections of the city you DO NOT want to go in.

I, personally, don't find South Street a place that I care to visit anymore.  It was fine in my 20's for bar hopping and fun, but at almost 70, that street and it's quirky characters no longer interests me.

Reading Terminal, as mentioned, can be a fun place to go but, to be honest, it's always mobbed with hungry people.

Ah, the great cheesesteak debate.  I haven't been to Geno's or Pat's in ages, but we do get Tony Luke's every once in a while. They are good, but I can get just as good at a neighborhood steak shop here in the northeast.  And, as another poster mentioned, if you go to South Philly, you can get a good cheesesteak just about anywhere.

If anyone suggests you go to Philadelphia Mills (formerly Franklin Mills) DON'T.  It's a toilet with run down stores and shops that are going out of business.

I agree that a visit to Betsy Ross' house is a fun experience, as well as seeing the Liberty Bell, the art museum and many other things mentioned here.

If you happen to be here when the flower show is in town, I wouldn't bother going.  There are so many other historical things to see in Philly.  The flower show is well, ya' know, flowers.  I don't know where you live, but I'm sure you have flowers.

I forget who said it, but another poster mentioned Peddlers Village and New Hope.  They are lovely areas if you want to venture just outside the city.

I love going to Lancaster.  I hope you enjoy your stay there.  I'm sure the friends that you're visiting will know just where to take you and what to show you.

Enjoy your stay in Philadelphia.

Re: Anyone Live In Philly, PA?

@JeanLouiseFinch   One last thing which no one mentioned......

A lot of the "side" streets & sidewalks are still "cobblestonned."  Wear FLAT soled shoes if you want to avoid a sprained or broken ankle.
