I have flown a lot this summer and you have been well advised to change your itinerary. I wouldn't plan less than 90 minute layover in any of the bigger airports. I have had planes delayed/cancelled because of weather, waiting for pilots that were delayed on earlier flights, and an angry passenger that had to be escorted off the plane. I haven't had a plane land at a connecting gate in years, it has always been a trek. And sometimes when you land the plane has to wait 10-20 minutes for their gate to clear. None of the flight attendants on any of the airlines has let passengers deplane first for tight connections either.
And as an added observation, people don't always deplane in order anymore. Often people from the back rush to the front and practically mow you over!
Please take a small, light bag with essentials in it such as a change of clothes/undies and your meds for "just in case." It can slide under the seat in front of you.
You will be fine! Just prepare carefully. You can enter your flight number in google search when your plane lands and it will tell you your gate number.
Have a great trip!
